Last week, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli acknowledged the life-saving actions taken by Borough Clerk Laura Borchers and by Police Officer Greg McBain. “While attending the borough clerks’ conference in April, our borough clerk, Laura Borchers, was at a dinner with other clerks from around New Jersey,” Cirulli said. “Sitting next to Laura was a female clerk from Lebanon, New Jersey who began choking on a piece of ice. Laura performed the Heimlich maneuver on this woman, saving her life.” Borchers later told Villadom TIMES that the woman had been laughing at a comedian when the ice lodged in her throat. The woman began nudging Borchers to get her This year, the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus will have a $7,182 Clean Communities grant from the State of New Jersey to spend on a local cleanup effort. Traditionally, the Girl Scouts have conducted a fall cleanup day in the downtown, most recently at borough hall. However, Laurie Hamm, who organizes events for the borough’s multiple Girl Scout troops, is proposing an outreach that would aid residents who need assistance with fall cleanups of their properties. In an interview last week, Hamm explained that the goal Borough considers use of $7K grant is to find a better and more personal way to use the grant, by extending the Girl Scouts’ cleanup effort to shut-ins or other residents who need help maintaining their properties. She said the current concept would be to allow residents to request the Scouts’ help with a one-day fall cleanup tentatively set for early November. When the issue was discussed at last week’s council (continued on page 23) attention, and the trained emergency medical technician then went to work. Borchers said the other clerks at the event told the woman from Lebanon she was fortunate to have been sitting next to a trained EMT. Borchers received her Registered Municipal Clerk certification in 2008, and is currently serving a three-year term. She studied at Montclair State University for her clerk’s credentials, and previously attended school in India. Before she accepted the borough clerk’s position in Ho-Ho-Kus, Borchers was an administrative assistant to Midland Park’s borough administrator and clerk.
