Chat with author Douglas Rogers The Upper Saddle River Library will host author Douglas Rogers, award-winning journalist and travel writer, on May 24 at 7 p.m. Rogers, author of “The Last Resort: A Memoir of Zimbabwe,” was raised in Zimbabwe and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. Thrilling, heartbreaking, and sometimes absurdly funny, his novel is a remarkable, true story about one family in a country under siege and a testament to the love, perseverance, and resilience of the human spirit. Best-selling authors to appear The Saddle River Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its annual luncheon on June 21 at The Tuxedo Club, 17 West Lake Road in Tuxedo Park, New York. Guest speakers will be best-selling authors Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a reception and book signing by the mother-daughter authors. They will sign copies of their latest novels, “I’ll Walk Alone” by Mary Higgins Clark and “Mobbed” by Carol Higgins Clark. Newcomers announce events The Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club welcomes all residents from Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, regardless of the length of their residency. The grand prize is a 2011 candy apple red Ford Mustang, fully loaded with the premium V-6 sport package. Tickets are $10. The winner will be announced on June 4 at the Lions’ annual carnival held in Upper Saddle River. Since its founding in 1958, the Saddle River Valley Lions Club has raised over $1.8 million for a variety of charities. The group also contributes to civic, youth, education, and human service groups within Mahwah, Ramsey, Allendale, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. Mary Wang wins logo contest
The Upper Saddle River Youth Triathlon Committee has selected Mary Wang as the winner of the 2011 Youth Triathlon T-shirt Contest. As winner, Wang will receive a new bicycle, compliments of Cyclesport in Park Ridge. The committee received over 30 entries, and found the ultimate decision very difficult due to the quality of the submissions. The members of the committee thank all of those children who participated in this year’s contest. All of the designs will be on display at the Youth Triathlon finish line at Lions Park on Saturday, June 11. The Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission’s Eighth Annual Upper Saddle River Youth Triathlon is open
to children ages eight through 14. The event includes swimming, biking, and running. The children will begin their swim at the Saddle River Valley Swim & Tennis Club, bike to Lions Park, and finish with a run at Lions Park. Participants will be divided into two age groups. Triathlon distances will differ for those groups. Contests, food, and prizes will be set up at the finish line in Lions Park. Sponsors and volunteers are welcome.
