May 18, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 5 Ho-Ho-Kus PBA contract talks now under way in borough by Jennifer Crusco After holding preliminary talks in 2010, representatives from the Ho-Ho-Kus Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 353 and the borough’s administration met last week to discuss the terms of a new police salary contract. Those in attendance included Councilman/Police Commissioner John Mongelli; Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli; Ho-Ho-Kus Police Officers Michael LaCroix, Jaime Bodart, Eugene Schultz, and Anthony Balestrieri; Ray Wiss, the borough’s labor attorney; and Richard Loccke, attorney for the PBA. The PBA’s most recent contract took effect Jan. 1, 2007 and extended through Dec. 31, 2010. That agreement included salary increases of 4.25 percent for each of the three years the contract was in effect. No detailed information concerning the current round of contract talks has been released to the press. The PBA contract covers the salaries of the majority of the police department’s personnel, except for Ho-Ho-Kus Police Chief John Wanamaker and Michael Pattman, who will be promoted to lieutenant next week. Pattman, who is currently a detective sergeant, had been involved in the early phase of the contract process, and has been replaced by his alternate, Officer Balestrieri. Members of the PBA and borough representatives met in July 2010 to discuss the potential terms of a new contract. In the fall, a borough official familiar with the negotiations said the two groups, which, at that time, had not met again since the summer, were exploring various options. The official noted the difficulty of updating the contract in the midst of the significant changes that were occurring in the police department. Several changes in key personnel took place during 2010, with the late November retirement of Gregory Kallenberg, who had been serving as the department’s chief, and the promotion of John Wanamaker from lieutenant to captain. After Kallenberg’s departure from Ho-Ho-Kus, Wanamaker was named officer in charge. Wanamaker was appointed chief by a council resolution earlier this year and sworn in to the department’s top post in March. The PBA is involved in various community activities and events. One of the year’s most popular activities is the Junior Police Academy, which has been canceled this year due to financial considerations. Residents may join Graydon The Village of Ridgewood has again invited residents of Ho-Ho-Kus to join Graydon Pool for the 2011 season. The pool, located at Linwood and Maple avenues in Ridgewood, will open June 4 and will remain open through Labor Day, Sept. 5. The facility offers the Water’s Edge Café, a picnic area with grills and tables, and a covered pavilion. Amenities also include a children’s playground, sun shades, water features, Adirondack chairs, basketball courts, volleyball nets, bocce courts, ping pong, and shuffleboard courts. Events feature children’s story time and American Red Cross swim instruction. Note: Swimmers who wish to use the deep water area must pass the Graydon Pool Deep Water Test.
