Letters to the Editor
(continued from page 22) they questioned a possible conflict and a rush to approve the measure. These are legitimate concerns. I raised several questions regarding conflicts of interest when I attended a council meeting regarding the transfer of the inn lease to then-Councilman Hamm. Ripps and Sager raise them again. Add to their concerns some potential new ones. Councilman Rorty’s neighborhood would benefit greatly from the limiting of restaurants and their encroachment in residential zones. Should he recuse himself? Should Councilman Troast recuse himself from discussions pertaining to restaurant issues in Ho-Ho-Kus? Troast’s personal relationship with Gordon Hamm, proprietor of the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern (a borough-owned building) raises the question of conflict or the perception of conflict. Limiting new restaurants would benefit his friend’s business. Mayor Randall’s rebuttal to Sager’s question on the perception of a conflict was, “As long as we’re a landlord, any decision that we make that affects the downtown could be viewed the same way.” Randall makes this comment as justification that a conflict of interest is “okay” as long as the borough government is involved. However, in my opinion, Randall has just made one of the strongest arguments for the reasons Ho-HoKus residents must advocate for the necessity of an independent ethics committee.
