I wonder how the rest of the citizens of Allendale are enjoying the curbside pickup. Nicolette “Nickie” Lisella Allendale Dear Editor: On May 24, the Ho-Ho-Kus Council will hold a public hearing to take public comments on Ordinance 987, with a possible adoption vote to follow. The objective of this ordinance is to limit the encroachment of restaurants in residential zones surrounding the central business district. Outlining the proposal, Planning Board Chairman John Hanlon said, “Doing nothing, the residents would have no say.” I agree that by not protecting the neighborhoods of Carlton, Warren, and Elmwood, traffic, activity, and undue noise on these local roads would certainly cause unwanted disturbances. However, there are several neighborhoods in Ho-Ho-Kus that have similar issues, and have been the subject of grievances by residents for years. The neighbors of Saint Bartholomew’s Church are on public record asking for the local government to intervene and find a viable solution to the overflow church parking that creates undue noise and traffic. How about the residents who are subjected to the overflow parking during school activities? Don’t forget the residents who have tried to no avail to curtail the volume of cut-through traffic in their neighborhoods. While maintaining residents’ quality of life is a “must do” objective, this objective must include all neighborhoods that are (or would be) subjected to a loss or inconvenience related to their quality of life and not just those in the central business district. The downtown parking situation, the root cause of the issue, is old news. It needed to be a priority when the master plan and streetscape projects were being discussed. Now that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent and resulted in a net reduction of parking spaces for certain businesses, the unsolved parking issue is being addressed after the fact. The time for communication between the local business community and the borough should haven taken place when the business district was being revamped. Ho-Ho-Kus residents who had expertise in this area of planning expressed an interest in working on the parking problem, but were overlooked or dismissed. Why? You’ll have to ask Mayor Randall. The borough government is again closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. As for Ho-Ho-Kus Chamber of Commerce members Ripps and Sager raising questions and seeking further information regarding the proposal to restrict restaurants, (continued on page 23) Edward F.
