Exhibit of political cartoons open The Hermitage Museum will present the historical traveling exhibit, “Looking at Lincoln: Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era,” through May 22 at the Hermitage Education & Conference Center, 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus. The exhibit, developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, explores the Civil War and issues of
slavery from the standpoint of political cartoons as a way to investigate Abraham Lincoln in the context of his times. In the 19th and early 20th centuries -- before radio, television, and the Internet -- Americans received news and expressed opinions about politicians and presidents through newspapers. The political cartoons that appeared at that time are vivid, sharp, and often offensive by today’s standards. Among the highlights of the exhibit are a California printing of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Lincoln and 14 political cartoons relating to the election of 1860. These facsimiles of rare historical documents are
from the archival collections of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City. The exhibit is open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission, which includes the exhibit and a tour of the Hermitage, is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $4 for children. Admission is free for members of the museum and for children age five and under. The Friends of the Hermitage, Inc., a nonprofit membership organization, manages The Hermitage, a New Jersey State Park. It all began in 1911 when 14 deacons from the Reformed tradition gathered in Paterson to discuss a topic rarely mentioned in the early 20th century: mental illness. With their commitment to provide physical, mental, and spiritual care in a small farmhouse, Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) has grown from a 17-bed psychiatric hospital to include a broad spectrum of mental-health and elder-care services with 12 expansive buildings on 78 acres in Wyckoff and Hawthorne, with a satellite location in Wayne. CHCC’s vision has brought services to thousands of people in our communities. To learn more about CHCC’s complete capabilities, visit chccnj.org.

(continued from page 7) become Bodart’s assistant. Bodart has been the assistant detective for the last five years, and has been a member of the force for approximately 14 years. “I wanted to keep the detective position in the department. It’s a very important position,” Chief Wanamaker added, noting that the detective is responsible for all active cases, including criminal and juvenile matters. Asked about other potential promotions within the department, Wanamaker said there is no plan to fill the captain’s vacancy, nor does he anticipate any promotions to the sergeant’s position this year. “With the council’s approval, early next year, I would like to make someone sergeant,” Wanamaker added.
