Waldwick May 11, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Waldwick Borough officials hope to iron out before the June primary problems that surfaced during the board of education elections at Election District 4 and elsewhere. The location of the Crescent School polling place had been moved from the school lobby to the music room for the school election on April 27, a change that will continue for all future elections. Though the change in location had been well publicized in the town’s website and local newspapers, voters unfamiliar with the school had difficulty finding the actual location, and poll workers were inconvenienced as well, according to Borough Clerk Paula Jaegge. “The situation was horrendous,” Jaegge told the mayor and council at its last meeting. “Our workers got an earful when the voters finally made it in.” The County Board of Elections moved the District 4 location for better school security, and so that the children mingling in the lobby and waiting for their ride home would not interfere with the polls. The new location, a trailer converted into a portable classroom now used as a music room, is barrier free. Jaegge said residents thought there was no election when they saw no cars in front of the school, since the polls were at the rear. A couple of elderly residents said they parked Borough’s Election Day issues to be addressed in front and walked to the back when they found the front doors locked, she said. Bathroom access for Crescent School poll workers was a problem as well. The access door to the school bathrooms had been left open because no one could buzz people in after hours. This compromised school security, Jaegge said. The polls were open from 2 to 9 p.m. Parking was also a problem, since poll workers took up some of the few available spots. They were not aware that they could park on the paved outdoor courts, she said, which would have freed up parking for voters. At the high school, Jaegge said parking became an issue because there was an important varsity baseball game going on and fans took up the eight to ten parking spaces reserved for voters, including removing the reserved parking signs. Police issued three summonses, she said. At town hall, also a polling place, parking was at a premium because voters competed for spaces with residents coming in to pay their taxes or to conduct borough business. “Someone called and said he couldn’t vote because he couldn’t find any parking,” Jaegge told the governing body. She said she would be meeting with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Raupers and would ask that the schools not schedule conflicting activities on election day. Councilman Chuck Farricker said that perhaps a bus could be rented to transport seniors to the polling places. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo noted that absentee ballots, which no longer require a reason, are available to voters for greater convenience.
