Film series features iconic actors Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of May is iconic actors, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: May 5, “Casablanca” with Humphrey Bogart (1942); May 12, “Separate Tables” with David Niven (1958); and May 19, “Out of the Past” with Robert Mitchum (1947). Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary; however arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Book club to discuss ‘A Gate at the Stairs’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will discuss “A Gate at the Stairs” by Lorrie Moore on Thursday, May 12 at 7:15 p.m. In Moore’s novel, which takes place in the months after 9/11, the brilliant daughter of a Midwestern farmer becomes a part-time nanny for an older white couple who have adopted an African-American baby. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The club welcomes new members and drop-ins regardless of residency. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For more information call (201) 652-5104. Band, color guard welcome new members The Waldwick High School Marching Band and Color Guard are seeking new members. Interested students are invited to a special performance on Saturday, May 21 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the middle school all-purpose room. Scouts collect school supplies Girl Scout Cadet Troop 826 is collecting school supplies and backpacks for area children in need. Donated items may be dropped off in the collection box in the Waldwick Public Library, 19 East Prospect Street, by May 15. The supplies will be delivered to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. Registration for children’s programs begins The Waldwick Public Library has announced a new schedule of programs for children ages six weeks and up. Registration will open on May 10, and programs will begin the week of May 16. Participation is limited to children who are residents of Waldwick. Bouncing Babies is for pre-walkers, ages six weeks to approximately 12 months, with an accompanying adult. The program will meet on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. and will include baby exercise, music, rhymes, and beginning books. Fun for Ones is open to children who are 12 to 24 months of age and walk, with an accompanying adult. This group will meet on Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. and will include music, movement, fingerplays, and simple stories. There will also be time for free play.
Queens (and king) for a day
Two-year olds and an accompanying adult are invited to Time for Twos on Wednesdays or Fridays at 10:15 a.m. The program will include stories, fingerplays, songs, and movement activities. The children will have time for free play. Storytime, recommended for children ages three and up, includes a variety of stories, puppets, music, and audience participation activities. No registration is required. The group will meet on Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. The After-School Book Bunch, which will be held on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m., is open to four- to six-year-olds (caregivers are invited) and will include stories, music, stretches, and occasional crafts. Children age seven and up are invited to Arts ‘n’ Crafts on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. The program will meet every month from September through May, and weekly during the summer. Association plans Golf Outing The Waldwick Baseball/Softball Association will host a Golf Outing fundraiser on Monday, May 16 at Black Bear Golf Course. Proceeds will benefit two new scholarships that will be awarded to graduating members of the high school’s baseball and softball teams in recognition of their achievements in sports and in academics. Learn about human trafficking Human trafficking, the illegal trade in human beings for commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor, is a modern-day form of slavery. Kathy Friess, program coordinator for the New Jersey Human Trafficking Task Force, will present, “Human Trafficking: Closer than You Think,” at the Waldwick Public Library, 19 East Prospect Street, on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. Friess will explain why New Jersey is a prime location for human trafficking, and what the state is doing to combat this criminal activity. The program will clarify definitions of smuggling, illegal immigration, and trafficking; correct assumptions and myths; and teach participants how to help prevent this crime from happening in their neighborhoods. This public education program is offered in partnership with the Human Trafficking Unit at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The program is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is recommended. For more information call (201) 652-5104. Waldwick High classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited. The cost is $75 for those who reserve tickets by June 1.
