Seniors to host harmonica players The Garden State Harmonica Club will entertain the Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors on Tuesday, May 24 at 1 p.m. at the Education Center of the Hermitage. The Harmonica Club, begun in 1971, is comprised of members from age 10 to 92 who love to play the harmonica. On June 14, Dave Smilon will present “New Deal of the 1930s.” Smilon will discuss organizations, including the WPA, PWA, and CCC, which were instrumental in returning people to the work force and providing infrastructure that is still in use today. The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Hermitage Education Building, 335 North Franklin Turnpike, in Ho-Ho-Kus. Beverages and dessert are served at noon, and programs begin at 1 p.m. or as noted. Residents age 55 and up are welcome to attend. Contact Joan at (201) 444-4896 for program information. For trip information, contact Sue at (201) 444-7235. Knights plan Golf Outing Saint Luke’s Knights of Columbus will hold its Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, June 13 at the Meadows Country Club. The event will include a day of golf, prizes, food, and camaraderie. The cost to participate is $120. All proceeds from the outing go towards the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund. History lecture to feature City of Paterson The Hermitage History Lecture Series will present “Paterson: Baroque Masterpiece to Silk City” on Wednesday, May 11 at the Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus. Nick Sunday will discuss the unique cultural legacy and later industrial and commercial growth of Paterson. Developed in 1793 by Pierre Charles L’Enfant, the original plan of the city was a baroque masterpiece.
Sunday, a Paterson native, has been instrumental in protecting the Jennie Tuttle Hobart collection, which is part of Paterson’s vast holdings of nineteenth century art and artifacts. Library board to meet The Ho-Ho-Kus Library Board will meet on Monday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library, 91 Warren Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus. This meeting is open to the public. Club to host Plant Sale, guest speaker The Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club’s Plant Sale will be held May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green. (Rain date: Sunday, May 15) The sale will feature a large variety of members’ home-grown perennials and a Bake Sale. This fundraiser supports the club’s horticultural scholarships. On May 16, the club will host guest speaker Karen Kinnae, who will discuss the many varieties of daylilies she has been cultivating in her garden for more than 30 years. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the second floor ambulance room at borough hall, 333 Warren Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus. New members and guests are always welcome. Volunteers sought for memorial observance American Legion Post 53 of Ridgewood-Ho-Ho-Kus is seeking volunteers to assist in placing American flags at the graves of military veterans on Saturday, May 14. Garden Club scholarships available Applications for the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club’s annual academic scholarship awards will be accepted until May 15. Applicants must be current residents of Bergen County and matriculated students who are studying or planning to study environmental science or related fields, including
horticulture and botany. There is no age limit; returning students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be awarded. Established in memory of Nina McNamara and Charles Anderson, the scholarship fund is supported by the club’s Annual Plant Sale. Residents may join Graydon Pool The Village of Ridgewood has again invited residents of Ho-Ho-Kus to join Graydon Pool for the 2011 season. The pool, located at Linwood and Maple avenues in Ridgewood, will open June 4 and will remain open through Labor Day, Sept. 5. The facility offers the Water’s Edge Café, a picnic area with grills and tables, and a covered pavilion. Amenities also include a children’s playground, sun shades, water features, Adirondack chairs, basketball courts, volleyball nets, bocce courts, ping pong, and shuffleboard courts. Events feature children’s story time and American Red Cross swim instruction. Note: Swimmers who wish to use the deep water area must pass the Graydon Pool Deep Water Test. The badge office will be open for pre-season sales on May 14 and 21 from 10 to noon, and daily from noon to 7 p.m. after June 4. Memberships for non-Ridgewood residents are $160 for adults and $140 for children ages two through 15. Online membership processing is available at ridgewoodnj.net/community pass. On the site are links to the New York Times Best-Sellers List, BCCLS, the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus website, the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School, and reference resources. There is also information on BeAT, managing borrowing from home with a valid library card, children’s programs, and new books that the library has recently acquired.
