Join the parade Allendale Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10181 invites men and women who have served our country, Scouts, church groups, and civic and community organizations to participate in the Memorial Day Parade and Service on May 30. Groups will assemble at 9 a.m. at Talman Place and Myrtle Avenue, and the parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. A service will be held at the end of the parade at Memorial Park. Jazz Night set The Brookside Hillside Music Association will present Jazz Night on Tuesday, May 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Brookside Cafeteria Annex, 100 Brookside Avenue in Allendale. Performers will include The Brookside Jazz Ensemble, The Brookside Lesson “A” Group, and the Northern Highlands Regional High School Jazz Ensemble. Tickets are $10 per person. Chamber plans meeting The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will host a lunch meeting on Tuesday, May 10 at noon at Savini’s, 168 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Donations sought for Carl’s Camp Jen Pash, an Allendale resident and junior at Immaculate Heart Academy, is seeking donations for summer camp backpacks for 170 youths (ages six through 12) who attend Carl’s Camp at Oasis in Paterson. Items needed are: beach towels, swim goggles, refillable drink bottles, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, bubble soap, and sunscreen. Monetary donations are also welcome. Checks may be made payable to “Oasis,” and the needed items will be purchased. Donations may be dropped off at 76 Fairhaven Drive in Allendale. Plant & Book Sale coming up The Allendale Garden Club and the Friends of the Allendale Library will hold a Plant and Book Sale on Saturday, May 14 at the Lee Memorial Library, 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. A large variety of locally grown perennials and nursery plants will be sold from the library lawn from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the garden club will be on hand to help with selections, answer questions, and assist when needed. Books will be sold upstairs and in the lobby of the library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many choices, including fiction and nonfiction, best-sellers, children’s books, tapes, and videos will be available at bargain prices from 25 cents to $1. Registration open for Annual 5K/Fun Run The Allendale Recreation Committee will host its Fifth Annual 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, May 15 at 9 a.m. at The Red Barn in Crestwood Park. In addition to the USATF-certified 5K and the Fun Run, there will be a 50yard dash for children age five and under. Awards, including gift certificates, will be given to the top finishers in each age category. The family event will also feature vendors, food, a DJ, and a T-shirt design contest. The winner of the design contest will have his or her logo featured on next year’s race shirts and posters. Cub Scouts plan Water Rocket Day The Allendale Cub Scouts will hold Water Rocket Day on Sunday, May 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Crestwood Lake’s Fields 5-6 (behind the Red Barn). Allendale boys in kindergarten through grade three are invited to participate. Attendees are asked to bring an adult and two empty two-
liter soda bottles. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. Football registration underway The Northern Highlands Junior Football Association invites players in grades two through eight who reside in Allendale and Upper Saddle River to join the Bulldogs for the upcoming tackle football season. Registration is now open; forms are available at www.leaguelineup.com/ nhjfa and by contacting Registrar Rosemarie Hebner at rhebner@optonline.net. Registration is due by May 15. The season will begin in mid-August. Fundraiser to benefit Highlands Sports The Northern Highlands Sports Association will host its Second Annual Golf Outing on Monday, May 16 at the High Mountain Golf Club in Franklin Lakes. Proceeds will support temporary lights for the fall sports programs and improvements to the Field of Dreams.
The $195 per person fee includes lunch, a round of golf, cocktails, and dinner. All golfers are welcome to participate. The day will feature special contests and prizes for lowest net, closest to the pin, and longest drive. Those who would like to enjoy cocktails and dinner only may do so for a $40 donation. The Northern Highlands Sports Association is a private organization composed of parents of high school students. Over the years, the group has been responsible for supporting everything from basic athletic equipment to the turf field at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale.
