In 1911, our spirits soared, too.
One hundred years ago, as the Wright Brothers’ dreams of soaring in a glider finally were achieved, 14 deacons from the Reformed tradition in Bergen and Passaic counties envisioned a way to lift the human spirit. They made a commitment to build a hospital for the mentally ill which would provide physical, mental, and spiritual care based on Christian principles. From a small 17-bed psychiatric hospital in a farmhouse, Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) has grown today to include a broad spectrum of mental-health and elder-care services with 12 expansive buildings on 78 acres in Wyckoff and Hawthorne, with a satellite location in Wayne. To learn all of the ways CHCC is continuing to lift the spirits of thousands of community residents, visit us at chccnj.org.

magnificent “Choral Fantasy” by Beethoven. An internationally acclaimed pianist, Levy has been called “first-class” by the New York Times. He regularly appears as a soloist, and in partnership with many of the world’s leading singers, instrumentalists, and orchestras throughout the states and abroad. A graduate of Oberlin, Levy is a founding member of many groups including the Hudson Trio, Kaleidoscope, and the award-winning Palisades Virtuosi. He has taught at numerous colleges, and is currently an instructor at Montclair State University, Kean University, and the Ridgewood Conservatory. He maintains an active and ongoing affiliation with the Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, and NJ PAC. The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus was founded in October 1909 in Ridgewood at the home of Frank R. Pawley, where a group met to discuss a men’s singing club. Today, the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus, directed by John Palatucci and accompanied by Levy, includes about 50 singers from New York and New Jersey and generally makes eight to 10 appearances annually including four formal concerts. Variety in repertoire is common in Orpheus Club concerts. A program might include ragtime, a Stephen Foster song, and classics, such as Brahms or Wagner. The Ridgewood Choral is a women’s chorus founded in 1928 by Frank Kasschau to enhance the culture of the area and to do service for the community. The choral, which is directed by Marjorie Vandervoort and accompanied by Susan LaFever, is currently comprised of about 45 singers, many of whom reside in the Ridgewood/Glen Rock area and nearby towns. The choral is dedicated to performing good vocal literature in a variety of musical styles from classical to contemporary, sacred to secular, and baroque to Broadway. For information and tickets, visit the orchestra’s website www.bergenphilharmonic.org or call (201) 837-1980. Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $10 for students. Thomas Jefferson Middle School is barrier-free.
