Thrilling, heartbreaking, and sometimes absurdly funny, his novel is a remarkable, true story about one family in a country under siege and a testament to the love, perseverance, and resilience of the human spirit. Jess to discuss Pine Barrens Robin Jess will present a program about the New Jersey Pine Barrens at the Saddle River Garden Club’s May 17 meeting. The session will begin at 7 p.m. at the Bishop House, 176 East Saddle River Road in Saddle River. The public is invited to attend. The club’s Plant Sale will be held May 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and May 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This annual event will be held at the Bishop House. The Saddle River Garden Club will award an academic scholarship of $1,000 to a qualified applicant. In order to be eligible, an applicant must be a Bergen County resident who is planning to study environmental sciences, conservation, architectural design, horticulture, or botany. New Cub Scouts welcome Registration for Upper Saddle River Cub Scouts is under way for the 2011-12 school year. All boys entering grades one through five are encouraged to join. Annual art exhibit open The Upper Saddle River Friends of the Library’s Fifth Annual Art Exhibit will be on display at the library at 245 Lake Street through May 24. Cleanup Day volunteers sought The Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission will sponsor its annual Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to noon. Areas that will be cleaned include Lions Park, the school grounds, the Riverwalk, and Hess Park. The commission asks adults, children, and organizations to support the effort by volunteering. DARE fundraiser announced On May 20 and 21, Chili’s of Ramsey, 900 Route 17 North in Ramsey, will host a fundraiser to benefit the Upper Saddle River DARE program. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of its total receipts for lunch, take out orders (including party platters), after school snacks, and dinner purchases from 11 a.m. to midnight. Triathlon registration under way The Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission’s Eighth Annual Upper Saddle River Youth Triathlon, scheduled for Saturday, June 11, is open to children ages eight through 14. The event includes swimming, biking, and running. The children will begin their swim at the Saddle River Valley Swim & Tennis Club, bike to Lions Park, and finish with a run at Lions Park. Participants will be divided into two age groups. Triathlon distances will differ for those groups. Contests, food, and prizes will be set up at the finish line in Lions Park.
