Allendale May 4, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 George Scherb named borough’s new chief of police by John Koster The Allendale Council has appointed Sergeant George Scherb as the borough’s new chief of police. Scherb will receive a salary of $142,000 in his new post. Scherb, who was present in the audience with former Chief Robert Herndon, was one of the three sergeants who took turns serving as acting interim chief after Herndon retired last summer. Herndon and other chiefs had asserted that Allendale’s most efficient choice would be a sworn police chief, rather than a director of public safety with academic training. At a previous meeting, the council announced that it would, in fact, swear in a regular chief. “We agonized more about what we were going to say to the two who were not selected than about what we would say to the one who was selected,” Mayor Vince Barra said. “What came across loud and clear is that these are three really great guys.” The other two candidates, Sergeant Al McCarthy and Sergeant Todd Griffith, had also sought the role of chief with a detailed written test and personal interviews with Mayor Barra and Council Members Ari Bernstein and Susan Lamonica. The council members said all three candidates were well qualified, thoroughly professional, and dedicated to Allendale and to their fellow officers. “It was an arduous task, and one I looked to with foreboding,” Bernstein said. “I felt we left no stone unturned.” “It was a very robust process,” said Lamonica, adding that the three, highly qualified candidates made the choice a difficult one. “I don’t think that anybody felt the process was slanted or that the decision was made in advance,” she said. “It was a process of getting to know all the candidates. They are all professional through and through,” said Mayor Barra. “This was by any standard the toughest, most agonizing decision we have made as elected officials. We had three totally professional candidates.” Scherb was born in Allendale and attended Northern Highlands Regional High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration and a master of public administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Married, with three children, Scherb lives in Council members Susan Lamonica, left, Ari Bernstein, right, congratulated Allendale’s new police chief George Scherb. Waldwick. He joined the Allendale Police Department in 1984 and was promoted to sergeant in 1986. As sergeant, Scherb was a squad supervisor and was also responsible for the management of the department’s budgeting and purchasing and for internal affairs and communications. Scherb will be officially sworn in as chief at the May 12 council meeting at the municipal building at 8 p.m. There will be a reception on May 14 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Allendale Police Headquarters.
