Ellen Marie Walsh and John Buffa survived a challenge by newcomer Amy Langevin to win the two available three-year terms. Walsh received 461 votes, Buffa earned 427, and Langevin garnered 278. Mary Ellen Nye, who ran unopposed for the one-year unexpired term, was elected with 531 ballots. Buffa was appointed to the board in 2009 and was elected in 2010 to complete former board president Peter Terenzio’s unexpired term. He has now been elected to a full three-year term. Buffa is a volunteer in the community, and spends most of his free time raising awareness for pediatric cancer and working to help find a cure through a public charity called Go4thgoal Foundation. He is chairman of the school board’s Finance and Buildings & Grounds committees, where he shares his expertise in finance and wealth management. Buffa is a graduate of Saint Lawrence University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics. He is employed as a portfolio manager. Walsh was elected to the board in 2008 and became board president in 2010. She earned a law degree from Voters endorse incumbent trustees, school budget Rutgers-Camden School of Law in 1990 and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and psychology from Swarthmore College. She has been a stay-at-home mother since January 2005. Prior to that, she worked for 13 years as an attorney in a firm specializing in school law. Walsh and her husband, John Higgins, have lived in Ho-Ho-Kus since 1996. They have three children, all of whom attend the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. She is currently chair of the board’s Policy Committee, vice chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, and liaison to the Recreation Committee. Over the years, she has also been a Cub Scout leader, a soccer coach, an art docent at the public school, a CCD teacher at Saint Gabriel’s Church, and the board’s liaison to the Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation. Nye was appointed to the board in 2010, after trustee Robert Inglima resigned. The trustee grew up in HoHo-Kus, and attended the public school. She graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy and from University of Virginia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and government. She subsequently earned a JD from Fordham Law School and an LLM (master of law degree) from New York University. As a tax lawyer, Nye structured corporate transactions working with White & Case, LLC in New York City until 2002. She is a Girl Scout leader, a CCD teacher at Saint Gabriel’s Church, and a trustee at Immaculate Heart Academy. She has also served on the board of the HoHo-Kus Contemporary Club. Nye and her husband have resided in Ho-Ho-Kus for 11 years. Their children current attend kindergarten and grade two at the public school. Approximately 28 percent of the borough’s registered voters cast ballots in last week’s election, which also saw the approval of the school budget’s tax levy. Voters approved the $11,432,932 tax levy associated with the $12,491,566 operating budget by a margin of 476-350. The tax rate associated with the school budget is 1.05 per $100 of assessed valuation. This budget will result in a tax increase of $256 for the owner of a home assessed at $751,375, which the board considered the average assessment in Ho-Ho-Kus following the recent reassessment of all borough properties. The Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club’s Plant Sale will be held May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green. (Rain date: Sunday, May 15) The sale will feature a large variety of members’ home-grown perennials and a Bake Sale. This fundraiser supports the club’s horticultural scholarships. On May 16, the club will host guest speaker Karen Club to host Plant Sale, guest speaker Kinnae, who will discuss the many varieties of daylilies she has been cultivating in her garden for more than 30 years.
