Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • March 30, 2011 Waldwick Waldwick’s newsletter has fallen victim to the escalating bureaucracy within the US. Postal Service and will no longer be mailed to all borough residents. The spring and fall editions of the newsletter will be posted on the borough’s website, www.Waldwicknj. org, and hard copies will be available at borough hall, the library, the public safety building and other public venues. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz recommended the Spring Update to be on website, not in mailbox change because post office bulk mailing regulations now require the borough to pay for the mailing in the Allendale Post Office, ship the mailing to Allendale for weighing and then dropping off the items at the Waldwick Post Office for the ultimate mailing to all addresses. Up to now the mailing was dropped off and paid for at the Waldwick Post Office. The borough has been publishing the informative pamphlets at least since 1998. “It is just too cumbersome and expensive,” commented Get A Can Inc. will be picking up Waldwick’s commingled recyclables beginning April 1, and the borough will accrue some savings over current costs. The Waldwick Council last week awarded a three-year contract to the Paterson company, a subsidiary of Gaeta Recycling, which has been collecting the town’s solid waste since last year. Future Sanitation of Passaic, whose recycling contract expires this month, bid slightly higher than Get A Can for the multi-year contract. Get A Can bid $48,000 for pickups from April through December, 2011, and $61,000 for each of the following two years. Future bid $46,800 for the 2011 service, but had higher prices thereafter: $62,400 for 2012 and $65,256 for 2013. Recycling contract results in savings Assistant Borough Administrator Jordan Battisti, who puts together the newsletters. She said residents who want the Spring Update emailed to them directly should contact her to request the service. Non-profit organizations with pertinent information to be included should also contact her. Battisti said the email notification program, whereby residents receive weekly updates in their inbox every Friday, will continue unchanged. The program has been in existence since May 2010. Residents may sign up for this program on the borough’s website. Over the last three years of the contract with Future Sanitation, which purchased Scuffy Carting, the original bidder, the borough paid more than it will pay for the next three years. The previous charges were: $64,167 in 200809; $65,256 in 2009-10 and $67,330 in 2010-11. Gaeta’s solid waste collections have also resulted in savings to the borough. The current three-year contract with Gaeta is for $258,960 for each year of the three-year contract. The previous three-year price with Scuffy/Future was $265,006 for 2008, $272,624 for 2009, and $273,703 for 2010. Recyclables are collected curbside on alternating Wednesdays. Curbside collection of solid waste is biweekly. Waldwick residents will now have to pay a fee when their pets are picked up after hours by the borough’s animal control officer. The borough council last week adopted an ordinance establishing a recovery fee when a stray animal is impounded due to emergency calls outside the control officer’s regular hours of operation. Under the ordinance, the recovery fee is to be paid directly to the animal control officer. The fee is in addition to any other costs incurred for care and kenneling of the animal, which are also paid directly to the warden. The amount of the fee and the regular hours of operation are determined by the contract the municipality has Animal owners to pay for retrieving stray pets Welcome donation with the animal control officer at the time the lost animal is picked up. The borough’s current contract with Tyco calls for a $60 charge for any calls outside of the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. The ordinance provides that the pet owner must produce a license or registration tag for the pet before it can be released by the animal control officer. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz explained that in the past the town was responsible for paying the afterhours fee charged by the animal warden. The new ordinance also combines into one chapter three previous ordinances relating to dogs, cats and pet waste.
