Muñiz went on to become a deacon and an assistant to the pastor. For several years, Muñiz took another path. He was employed as an MIS executive until he again re-evaluated his life at age 36, when he decided to enter the seminary. Muñiz attended an accelerated program at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. After completing his studies, Muñiz began looking for a church to pastor, and learned about the Bergen Baptist Church in Waldwick through the Metro New York Baptist Association. Coincidentally, the Bergen Baptist Church had founded the Nazareth Baptist Church in West New York that Muñiz so loved. “Little did I know, there were only 13 families left at the time,” Muñiz said. He explained that the church, now known as Christ Community Church, had once had a thriving congregation of 200 members that included some affluent, and some famous, members of the community. “In 1996, they invited me to come and speak and asked me to stay,” Muñiz added. “My wife, Norma, and I assessed Norma Muniz and Jeanine Diamond Pastor Ray Muniz Pastor Ramon “Ray” Muñiz was born in Cuba and came to the United States as a young man. At 16, he suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound that changed the way he looked at life. Shortly after his recovery, Muñiz visited Nazareth Baptist Church in West New York, New Jersey, forging what would become a life-long connection. “I fell in love with the church,” he recalled, explain- the needs of the community and added a preschool, the Building Blocks Child Center. The church started growing a little at a time. We also opened a Hispanic mission to serve the many Salvadorans in the area.” He said people have responded positively to the church, which now has over 180 members. “Our church is very symbolic,” Muñiz added. “We understand our community, and know that education begins at an early age. We have a lot of young families who are raising their children with a love for God.” Christ Community Church is located at 136 Wyckoff Avenue, Waldwick.
