Allendale
The Colleen Giblin Foundation, an organization that supports children’s neurological and cancer research, recently announced that it will be honoring the Kunisch Family of Allendale at it 2011 Humanitarian Awards Dinner, set for April 7. Honorees will also include Ronald L. Tobia, Esq. and James P. Vail, president of Paramus Catholic High School. The event, “Magical Evening of Music under the Stars,” will be held at The Estate of the Florentine Gardens, in River Vale from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. The Kunisches, Mike, Bobbie, Chris, Craig, Katie, and Ken, are the proprietors of the Allendale Bar & Grill, the Mahwah Bar & Grill, and the Manchester Bar & Grill, in Manchester, Vermont. “(The Kunisches) are very deserving individuals, whose impact on others is immeasurable. They exemplify making a difference in the community and in the lives of those they know and to strangers alike,” Giblin Foundation Executive Director Meg Minassian stated. The family became involved in fundraising for the Giblin Foundation since they knew Vickie and Paul Giblin, whose daughter, Colleen, died from an inoperable brain tumor. “We have held a golf outing for the past 28 years. We were the first benefit for Tomorrow’s Children,” Mike Kunisch explained. Recently, the family became involved in the relief effort following the Haitian earthquake since both of their head chefs, along with many other employees, are from Haiti. “We hoped to raise $10,000 through the Rose Foundation, to be distributed directly in Haiti and not through the government,” said Craig Kunisch, manager of the MB&G. “To date, we have raised $200,000. Our parents told us that you are never going to change the world, but you can make a difference for some cause.” The family also assists Sacred Heart School in Jersey City. “They have no parish, so we assist them with fundraising,” Bobbie Kunisch noted.

On Thanksgiving, Mike and Bobbie used to bring families into their home for dinner. “We had to unfortunately stop, for today our extended family is over 21 people,” Chris pointed out. The family has received the Mahwah Chamber of Commerce’s designation as Company of the Year for Outstanding Community Service, and earned the New Jersey Restaurant Association’s Good Neighbor Award. The Colleen Giblin Foundation for pediatric neurological research has been working since 1985 to discover new treatments for childhood diseases that affect the nervous
system. These illnesses include muscular dystrophy, pediatric AIDS, seizure disorders, GLUT 1, genetic and mitochondrial illnesses, and cancers of the brain. “Our goal is simple,” said Vickie Giblin, “We hope that a doctor will never again have to say to a mother and father, ‘Take your child home. There’s nothing that we can do.’” The foundation is located at 690 Kinderkamack Road, Suite 104, in Oradell. Tickets for the dinner are $150.
