Woman’s Club offers scholarships The Woman’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus is currently accepting scholarship applications from graduating seniors who attended the Ho-Ho-Kus Elementary School. Awards will be made based on the following criteria: leadership, community service, school performance, and financial need. Applications will be accepted until May 1. For more information, call (973) 839-1470. Garden Club scholarships available Applications for the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club’s annual academic scholarship awards will be accepted until May 15. Applicants must be current residents of Bergen County and enrolled students who are studying or planning to study environmental science or related fields, including horticulture and botany. There is no age limit; returning students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be awarded. Established in memory of Nina McNamara and Charles Anderson, the scholarship fund is supported by the club’s Annual Plant Sale. This year’s sale will be held on Saturday, May 14. Learn about hot air ballooning Daniel Schultz will present a slide show and discussion of hot air ballooning to the Ho-Ho-Kus Woman’s Club on April 4 at Saint Bartholomew’s Church Hall, 70 Sheridan Avenue, at noon. Club plans Dessert Card Party The Woman’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus will host its annual Spring Dessert Card Party fundraiser on April 8. This event will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Waldwick United Methodist Church at 25 Franklin Turnpike, Waldwick. Homemade desserts, coffee and tea, and special prize baskets will be featured. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling Barbara at (201) 444-9389.
The April 4 meeting will feature Josen Cianello’s tips for growing, storing, and using herbs. Members of the public are invited to these programs. For additional information, call (201) 652-2236. The Woman’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus is a member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, organized in 1894. During WWII the NJSFWC established a committee on recreational work with the armed service forces civil defense members while serving on the New Jersey Council of National Defense. This work continues to the present day, and all member clubs of the NJSFWC are working toward helping those who are fighting cancer. The Woman’s Club of Ho-Ho-Kus is supporting Gilda’s Club in Hackensack Troop seeks basket supplies In its effort to earn the Silver Award, HoHo-Kus Girl Scout Troop 1413 is now collecting Easter basket supplies to be donated to Oasis: A Haven for Women and Children in Paterson. Items needed include baskets, straw, candy, plastic eggs, and toys. Donation drop boxes are located at the WorthPinkham Library at 91 Warren Avenue and at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall at 333 Warren Avenue. Easter Food Drive underway Saint Bartholomew’s Church will conduct an Easter Food Drive to benefit the Ramapough Indians of Mahwah and other area families who need assistance. The church, located at 70 Sheridan Avenue in Ho-Ho-Kus, is requesting donations of canned and dried foods, coffee, vegetables,
fruits, hams, and similar dinner items. The food should be left in the front hallway of the church April 10 through 16 and marked “Palm Sunday Food Donation.” Saint Bartholomew’s Church is a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. Its outreach programs include food drives, collections of household items for Saint Philip’s Ministries in Paterson, and support for the migrant workers and their families in Goshen, New York. Program on pet fitness rescheduled The Worth Pinkham Memorial Library has rescheduled its program on Pet Fitness for Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. The program was originally planned for March 22. Auxiliary offers scholarships The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ho-HoKus Volunteer Fire Department will offer two $750 scholarships for 2011. One will be awarded to a fire department member or immediate family member, and the second will be presented to a Ho-Ho-Kus resident who wishes to continue his or her education. Applications are available at the Ho-HoKus Borough Hall, The Ho-Ho-Kus Public School, The Ho-Ho-Kus Public Library, and at Northern Highlands High School. Completed applications may be sent to the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 637, Ho-HoKus, NJ 07423. Applications must be postmarked by May 1. Finalists will be notified by mid-May to arrange an interview. Recipients will be notified by June 15.
