The Waldwick Board of Education last week approved a three-year contract with the Waldwick Education Association which provides for a 3.65 percent salary increase for the current school year, zero percent for next year and 2.5 percent increase for the third year of the agreement. The agreement covers aides, office personnel and custodial/grounds and maintenance employees as well as teaching staff members. “I’m very happy they’ve reached the agreement,” commented Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Raupers. “The freeze will help the district face the financial challenges resulting from the reduction in state aid from previous years,” she added. There will be no increase in stipends paid for additional assignments during the life of the contract. However, new stipends will be added for lacrosse at $7,962 for the varsity coach and $5,272 for the JV coach. The new contract includes givebacks in the tuition reimbursement policy. First and second year tenure track teachers will not be eligible for tuition reimbursement, but their course work will count towards their movement within the salary guide. Third year teachers may receive

$1,000 a year in reimbursement at the discretion of the superintendent and their building principal. Fourth year teachers will continue being eligible for full reimbursement as per the previous contract. Non-tenure track teachers, such as temporary replacement teachers, are not eligible for reimbursement during their first three years of employment. The new agreement provides changes in several other areas of employment. Personal days may accumulate for all staff members (up to six days per year) for use in the next year. Teachers will continue to be able to use more than two personal days in a row. Aides, office personnel, and custodial/grounds and maintenance employees may not use more than two personal days in a row. Additionally, beginning with the 2011-12 school year, aides will be eligible for one family illness day per year. Retroactive to July1, 2010, office personnel will receive the following longevity payments: $1,700 after 10 years; $2,200 after 15 years, $2,700 after 20 years and $3,200 after 25 years. The salaries for teachers during the current school year, retroactive to July 1, 2010, will range from $48,875
for a beginning teacher with a BA degree to $98,689 for a teacher with a master’s degree and 45 additional credits in 18 steps. Next school year, the same range will apply. For the 2012-13 school year, the salary for a beginning teacher with a BA degree will be $50,655, rising to $99,689 at the top of the guide, which will also have an additional step. For aides, the salaries range from $23,644 to $28,048 in five steps for aides working 6 ½ hours a day and from $27,282 to $30,058 in five steps for aides working7 ½ hours a day. For office staff new salaries range from $39,980 to $55,877 in four steps depending on the classification of each individual employee. Custodial/grounds and maintenance salaries are also based on the individual job and range from $42,210 to $63,848 in six steps.
