New Jersey Transit to begin repairs at Warren Avenue
by Jennifer Crusco New Jersey Transit representatives held a preconstruction meeting with Ho-HoKus officials last week in anticipation of the track and roadway repairs the company will make where its tracks cross Warren Avenue near the Ridgewood border. Following that meeting, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli reported that New Jersey Transit plans to begin the work the night of Friday, April 1. The project is slated to begin at 9 p.m. that evening, and should continue for the next two weeks. Work will be carried out on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., and could continue for extended hours on Saturdays. Crews also expect to be working on the project one or two nights. New Jersey Transit will replace the section of tracks now located in the Warren Avenue roadway and will repave the street. Cirulli noted that New Jersey Transit has been asked to coordinate its work with Bergen County, which is still in the midst of repairs to the Warren Avenue Bridge. The goal, Cirulli said, is to have New Jersey Transit finish its project while the county is still at work on the bridge. Last fall, the Warren Avenue Bridge was closed to all motorists and pedestrians so county crews could begin a complete refurbishment of that structure. Plans had called for that project to be finished at the end of 2010, but winter weather conditions did not allow for certain aspects of the project to be completed, Cirulli said. The administrator noted that the county’s crews must still pour concrete, paint, and install lights. He recently heard from the county that the bridge project should be completed by the end of the spring or the beginning of summer. The bridge project involves new reinforcements, resurfacing of the deck, new

sidewalks, and new lights. Built in 1905, the Warren Avenue Bridge is a through truss bridge that allows vehicular and pedestrian traffic to cross over the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook on Warren Avenue. Through truss bridges earned that name because vehicles – in some instances, trains – are permitted to travel through the box created by the metal structure of the bridge. These bridges are constructed with two side trusses that are connected across the top and bottom. The steel trusses are created from riveted metal plates and bars that form “truss members.” Those metal pieces are connected so they form rectangular and triangular shaped sections with open spaces between them. This construction allows truss bridges be created without a great deal of bulk, but still be able to accommodate heavy vehicles. The Warren Avenue Bridge, which is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, was reportedly rehabilitated by Bergen County in 1921.
