School Board President Ellen Marie Walsh and incumbent trustee John Buffa have filed for reelection. They will be challenged by newcomer Amy Langevin. Incumbent Mary Ellen Dooley Nye will run unopposed for the one-year unexpired seat on the board. Buffa was appointed to former board president Peter Terenzio’s unexpired term in 2009, and was elected in April 2010. He is now running for a full three-year term on the school board. Raised in the Long Island community of Merrick, Buffa is a graduate of Saint Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he received a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics. He has been employed at a New York-based investment bank. He and his wife, Gina, who was raised in Ho-Ho-Kus, have three daughters. Langevin graduated from Waldwick High School and from Ramapo College of New Jersey, where she received a degree in accounting. She has been employed by KPMG, LLP in Montvale since 1995. She is a manager within the global mobility team a human resources function. She moved to Ho-Ho-Kus in 1999. Langevin has two children. Her son attends the HoHo-Kus Public School and her daughter attends the HoHo-Kus/Waldwick Co-op. She was responsible for overseeing and revamping the school’s fundraising programs. The candidate assists the Home School Association through volunteer initiatives, which have included hospitality. She is a parishioner of Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River. During 2001-03, she was a volunteer on the church’s catechumenate team. The candidate said she has been attending Ho-Ho-Kus Board of Education meetings out of interest in children’s education. Walsh, who was elected in 2008, became board president at the 2010 reorganization meeting. She earned a law degree from Rutgers-Camden School of Law in 1990 and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and psychology from Swarthmore College. She has been a stay-at-home mother since January 2005. Prior to that, she worked for 13 years as an attorney in a firm specializing in school law. Walsh and her husband, John Higgins, have lived in Ho-Ho-Kus since 1996. They have three children, all of whom attend the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. She is currently chair of the board’s Policy Committee, vice chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, and liaison to the Recreation Committee. Over the years, she has also been a Cub Scout leader, a soccer coach, an art docent at the public school, a CCD teacher at Saint Gabriel’s Church, and the board’s liaison to the Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation. “During my term, two things that I’m proud of are the selection of current superintendent (Deborah Ferrara) and the conclusion of the teachers’ contract negotiations,” Walsh said. Nye was appointed to the board in 2010, after trustee Robert Inglima tendered his resignation. The trustee grew up in Ho-Ho-Kus, and attended the public school. She graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy and from University of Virginia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and government. She subsequently earned a JD from Fordham Law School and an LLM (master of law degree) from New York University. Nye and her husband have lived in Ho-Ho-Kus for 11 years.
