Curbside pickup (continued from page 3) The lowest responsible bid from Suburban Disposal, Allendale’s present contractor, showed savings of $50,683 annually on rear-yard pickup, or $188,682 annually on curbside pickup. For a five-year contract, the annual savings would be $41,184 for rear-yard pickup and $186,183 annually for front-yard pickup. The total savings for curbside pickup would be $566,048 over three years and $930,914 over five years. Barra said that, based on his conversations, the contractors would handle a reasonable number of rear-yard pickups for handicapped or elderly people, and added that residents could also contract privately to continue rearyard pickup for about $40 a month even if the contractor was signed for curbside pickup. “Rear-yard pickup could be directly contracted between contractor and homeowner,” Barra said. Barra said, however, that he was not about to open bids to invite offers from contractors who bid on disposal only. “My father was the head of New York City Sanitation,” Barra said. “I’ve been in garbage all my life…not only have we considered (disposal only) but we’ve done it in the past, and we’ve been burned on it.” Mayor Barra and the council members said they were glad the lowest responsible bid came from their present contractor, who was described as satisfactory for regular pickup.
