Waldwick
The Waldwick Board of Education would like to discuss with the borough sharing the cost of field maintenance and possibly looking into hiring a part-time recreation director. Board President Patricia Levine raised these concerns as she addressed the mayor and council during their regular meeting last week. Levine said that the newly-reorganized board would be making an effort to see that a member is in attendance at every meeting of the mayor and council. Councilman Chuck Farricker attends board of education meetings regularly and reports on them at council meetings. Singling out the operation of the floodlights used for night games, Levine said that it costs the board $21,000 to $22,000 per year to run them. But, she said, school teams use the lights only 10 percent of the time.
Board of education wants help with field costs
Levine said some of the sports groups have been contributing towards the lights, but it’s not enough. She also said by way of an example on the high cost of field maintenance that it had recently cost the board $3,100 to do repairs on the turf field. “We’re worried those costs will impact on our programs,” Levine said. “The time is coming. We are all squeezed for money. As time goes forward, we have less and less for our programs.” The board president also noted that the school fields are used extensively by the town recreation teams, yet the board has no control over their operation or the coaches. “Our Athletic Director has no control over them,” she said. Levine suggested that a recreation director could be hired to deal with the recreation teams. “Have a town position or a shared position to deal with the rec. groups. Perhaps they’ll have to add $20 to the registration fee to pay for it,” she said. “Everyone uses our facilities – gyms, turf field, etc. We
are paying. This needs to be addressed,” she concluded. Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult said the council would discuss the board’s request at its next meeting.
Friends make installment
Evelyn Sehr, president of the Friends of the Waldwick Library, presents a check for $40,000 to Waldwick Mayor Russell Litchult as the first installment towards the $300,00 commitment made by the Friends towards the $400,000 library renovation project.
