Highlands student is one of 10 recognized in nation Caroline Broder of Northern Highlands High School in Allendale has been selected as one of 10 MaxPreps Citizen Athletes for 2010-11. “We are pleased to once again honor these outstanding teens with our most prestigious individual recognition as Citizen-Athletes of the Year,” said company President Andy Beal. “It’s nice to be recognized for all of my hard work throughout high school. I would also like to thank my incredible athletic department at Northern Highlands for providing me with so many opportunities,” said Broder, a 17-year-old senior. The award, which is presented by the National Guard, is given to high school students who exemplify positive values and demonstrate leadership in all areas of life – community service, academics, athletics, and school involvement. While they may not be the often-heralded most valuable player on their athletic team, they are MVPs in life, making a positive difference in all they do. Each regional winner receives a $2,500 scholarship. Broder, a four-year starter on the soccer team, is a two-time All State honoree and was listed as one of the top 20 players in northern New Jersey in 2010. She was also the 2009 Bergen Record Athlete of the Year and was twice named to the first team for Bergen County. In the classroom, Broder maintains a 4.15 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the school’s high honor roll. In addition, she serves as the class treasurer and the school’s administration has appointed her as one of the school’s student representatives at board of education meetings. This fall, Broder will attend Amherst College, where she will study economics. Broder also spent time at the Gladney Center for Adoption in New York working in the Asian adoption department. Finally, she volunteered her time in her local community in food shelters and tutoring young students. Award presented Allendale Chamber of Commerce President Nickie Lisella, left, presents the $1,000 scholarship to Nicole Sirubi of Allendale. A Northern Highlands graduate, Sirubi plans to major in business and marketing at the University of Maryland. Her DECA project, a detailed 11-page marketing plan, advertising campaign, and budget built around a single slogan or concept for the Tory Burch Company, helped the Northern Highlands team garner a Top 3 award at the DECA Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, the first time in nearly 10 years the school has received the honor.
