Warriors announce tryouts The Waldwick Warriors Soccer Club will hold tryouts beginning June 7 at the Waldwick High School turf field. Travel scrapbooks on display Scrapbooks containing the travel memories of Doris Wagner will be on display at the Waldwick Public Library through June 30. A lifelong resident of Waldwick, Wagner has enthusiastically documented her extensive travels throughout the United States. Included in the exhibit are scrapbooks from visits to the San Diego Zoo; Mardi Gras in New Orleans; Dollywood; Kennedy Space Center; Branson, Missouri; Wall Drug Store in Wall, South Dakota; and Walt Disney World. One of Wagner’s favorite scrapbooks displays photographs of celebrities she met through her many fan club memberships. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (201) 652-5104. Annual Strawberry Social set The Waldwick United Methodist Church will hold its annual Strawberry Social on Thursday, June 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., rain or shine, on the church lawn at 25 Franklin Turnpike. The event will feature ice cream, strawberries on a homemade biscuit or pound cake, and a beverage. The cost for a full portion is $6 per person and $3 for a half portion. Players sought for softball benefit The Waldwick High School Softball Team will challenge the Waldwick High School Softball parents, softball alumni, and faculty in a Kisses for Kelly softball benefit
on Saturday, June 11 at 1 p.m. at the high school softball field located on the corner of Wyckoff and Hopper avenues. (Rain date: June 12.) The cost to play is $20 per person. Fans and supporters are asked to make a monetary donation to the Kisses for Kelly fund. Kiss for Kelly was established to assist 16-year old Waldwick resident Kelly Bjork for the cost of her medical needs. Summer Reading Club registration under way Children ages two and up are invited to participate in the Waldwick Library Summer Reading Club, “One World, Many Stories,” from June 20 to Aug. 26. Children who read 10 books at their grade level or higher, or have 20 books read to them, qualify for prizes at the end of summer. Sign up may be completed at the front desk beginning Monday, June 20. Registration will be open for special events planned for this summer. Flow Circus Juggling, which is the first event, is planned for Saturday, June 25 at 11 a.m. Participation in the Summer Reading Club and related special events is open to Waldwick residents only. Reminder: District 4 polling place change Residents who live in District 4 and vote at the Crescent School now vote in the music room located at the rear of the school. Voters should drive past the entrance and bear right down a slight hill. Once in the back, an American flag will be displayed on the door indicating the new polling place. There is adequate parking and the site is barrier-free. This location will be used for all future elections. The school lobby will no longer be used. Film series to feature Director Michael Curtiz Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, set-
ting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The films selected for the month of June were all directed by Michael Curtiz. The schedule of screenings will be: June 9, “Mildred Pierce” (1945); June 16, “Angels with Dirty Faces” (1938); and June 23, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942). Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary; however, arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Vincenza Scarpaci to speak Educator and lecturer Vincenza Scarpaci, author of “The Journey of Italians in America,” will present a slide lecture at the Waldwick Public Library on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Scarpaci will examine the history and legacy of Italians in the United States through some of the more than 400 unique photographs—some taken in Waldwick—that appear in her book. The lecture will illustrate how, beginning in the late 1870s, Italian immigrants and their descendants faced the hardships, disappointments, achievements, and successes of the American experience. A Brooklyn native, Dr. Scarpaci graduated from Hofstra University in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in history. She went on to obtain her Ph.D. in history from Rutgers University in 1972. She has worked as an educator at the university level, consultant, grant writer, and volunteer coordinator. Her work has been published in journals and encyclopedias around the globe. She resides in Eugene, Oregon. The program is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is required. Waldwick High classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited.
