Waldwick June 8, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 11 Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity International traveled from across the country to build homes for a week in New Jersey and raise awareness about the Cars for Homes matching donation program. The “Jersey Road Trip” included a Habitat for Humanity construction site in Waldwick, where volunteers spent a day to help build homes in partnership with hardworking, low-income families. “Volunteers, who work alongside future homeowners, are central to Habitat’s mission to help families obtain affordable housing,” said Marcia Rundle, director of the HFHI Cars for Homes program. “During our work week, we met a different group of volunteers each day that, between them, characterized the diversity of Habitat volunteers.” In addition to framing houses, hanging doors, landscaping, and weatherizing, the Cars for Homes work crew raised awareness about the Cars for Homes matching grant program. HFHI will match up to $100,000 from its Cars for Homes program, doubling the value of any vehicles donated by June 30 to Habitat’s affiliates in Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic counties. The trip culminated in an event called “Wheels for Deals” at the Morris County Habitat for Humanity ReStore resale outlet. Supporters of Habitat for Humanity attended the celebration, which featured discounts on household goods, prizes, and ‘Jersey Road Trip’ collects cars, builds homes refreshments, a mini Classic Car Show and a car donated to Cars for Homes as part of the matching donation program. In addition to Rundle, who traveled from Bozeman, Montana for the weeklong event, volunteers from the Cars for Homes program who participated in the Jersey Road Trip included Tom and Sandy Hearn from Syracuse, New York; Joe Hearn, Kelly Furtado, and Jesse and Eric Beauregard from Newport, Rhode Island; and Sally Black from Bend, Oregon. According to Rundle, the New Jersey affiliates’ matching grant proposal was chosen due to the collaboration between affiliates, the commitment to an ongoing effort to promote the Cars for Homes program, and the inclusion of energy efficiency, sustainability and community involvement in the New Jersey Habitat building projects. The matching grant program will continue through June 30. Donors should call 877-277-HFHI (4344) to arrange for pickup, or they can give online at www. carsforhomes.org. Vehicle donations from zip codes in Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties will automatically count toward the matching donation program. Donors from other zip codes will need to call to designate their donation to one of the four affiliates participating in the matching program: Paterson Habitat, Habitat Newark, Morris Habitat for Humanity or Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County. Representatives from the Habitat for Humanity Cars for Homes program went on a ‘Jersey Road Trip’ to publicize their matching donation program, which doubles the value of vehicles donated to Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic counties.
