III • June 1, 2011 Film series to feature Director Michael Curtiz Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The films selected for the month of June were all directed by Michael Curtiz. The schedule of screenings will be: June 2, “Captains of the Clouds” (1942); June 9, “Mildred Pierce” (1945); June 16, “Angels with Dirty Faces” (1938); and June 23, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942). Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary; however, arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Reminder: District 4 polling place change Residents who live in District 4 and vote at the Crescent School now vote in the music room located at the rear of the school. Voters should drive past the entrance and bear right down a slight hill. Once in the back, an American flag will be displayed on the door indicating the new polling place. There is adequate parking and the site is barrier-free. This location will be used for all future elections. The school lobby will no longer be used. Archivist to speak Gary Saretzky, archivist at the Monmouth County Archives, will present “Margaret Bourke-White: ‘The Eyes on Russia’ Photographs” at the Waldwick Public Library, 19 East Prospect Street, Thursday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. In 1930, Bourke-White, a photojournalist who grew up in Bound Brook, became the first foreign photographer after the Russian Revolution to obtain permission to photograph the Soviet government. Saretzky’s slide lecture traces Bourke-White’s transformation from an industrial photographer to an artist with a social conscience, whose left-wing associations in the 1930s came back to haunt her during the McCarthy era. This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Concert in the Park announced The 2011 Annual Highlands Community Association Concert in the Park will be held Saturday, June 4, at 6 p.m. at the HCA Park on West Saddle River Road in Waldwick. The free concert, which is open to Waldwick residents and their guest, will feature the 3M Band. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and picnic supplies and grills for outdoor dining. The concert sponsor is Judy O’Brien of Liberty 100 Realty. Waldwick High School classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/ Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited. The cost is $75 for those who reserve tickets by June 1. Athletic boosters plan Golf Outing The Waldwick High School Athletic Association Booster Club will host the 2011 Warriors Golf Classic on Wednesday, June 29 at the Farmstead Golf and Country Club in Lafayette. The cost of the event is a donation of $125 per golfer and includes one round of golf, breakfast refreshments, a sit down lunch, and prizes. Vincenza Scarpaci to speak Educator and lecturer Vincenza Scarpaci, author of “The Journey of Italians in America,” will present a slide lecture at the Waldwick Public Library on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Scarpaci will examine the history and legacy of Italians in the United States through some of the more than 400 unique photographs—some taken in Waldwick—that appear in her book. The lecture will illustrate how, beginning in the late 1870s, Italian immigrants and their descendants faced the hardships, disappointments, achievements, and successes of the American experience. A Brooklyn native, Dr. Scarpaci graduated from Hofstra University in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in history. She went on to obtain her Ph.D. in history from Rutgers University in 1972. She has worked as an educator at the university level, consultant, grant writer, and volunteer coordinator. Her work has been published in journals and encyclopedias around the globe. She resides in Eugene, Oregon. The program is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is required.
