U.S. Navy veteran Omaira Carino has been sworn in as the newest member of the Waldwick Police Department. She will be paid an annual salary of $37,907. After serving approximately four years in the Paterson Police Department, Carino was among the 125 officers who were laid off in April 2011. The Waldwick Council’s resolution appointing Carino notes that the borough reviewed the Rice List of officers provided by civil service for an experienced candidate to fill the vacancy. After reviewing a number of candidates from the list, Waldwick Borough Administrator Gary Kratz and Police Chief Mark Messner recommended Carino for

the position. Although Waldwick is a civil service town, when the borough began its search for a new police officer, there was no current civil service list. As a result, municipal officials went to the Rice List which is also provided by civil service. Carino graduated from the Paterson Police Academy in 2007, and was sworn in as a Paterson police officer in October of that year. She worked as a patrol officer for approximately two years. In December 2009, she transferred to the traffic division. She subsequently received certification for Crash Investigation I and II. She also assisted with the investigations of vehicular accidents and vehicular fatalities, often writing the in-depth reports. After graduating from John F. Kennedy High School in Paterson in 1996, Carino immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. She attended basic training in Chicago. Once she finished basic training, she received her firefighter’s certification and was stationed in La Maddalena, Italy. While she was in Italy, she served on the USS Simon Lake and was promoted to Yeoman, Third Class. In 1999, she was stationed in Lemoore, California, where she attended West Hills Community College as a child psychology major. As the result of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Carino was stationed in Manama, Bahrain to assist with the front line troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom. For her service there, she received the National Defense Service
