Films focus on ill-fated love The Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of July is ill-fated love, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: July 14, “Camille” (1937); July 21, “Leave Her to Heaven” (1945); and July 28, “Mortal Storm” (1940). Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary; however arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Book club to discuss Kingsolver novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver on Thursday, July 14 at 7:15 p.m. Set in leftist Mexico in the 1930s and the United States in the ‘40s and ‘50s, this powerful political novel focuses on the small mistakes or gaps (lacunas) that change history. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins regardless of residency. Leaders sought for Girl Scout program The Waldwick Girl Scout program is seeking volunteer leaders for new troops that will be forming in the fall. Volunteer leaders are needed for troops for girls who will be entering kindergarten. Help is also needed with established troops for older girls. Registration for new girls will be held in September. Library plans summer events for children The Waldwick Public Library will welcome back everyone’s favorite “big kid,” singer/songwriter Kurt Gallagher, July 19 at 11:45 a.m. Gallagher will present songs, crazy instruments, bubbles, and more. ESL Programs take summer break The English as a Second Language programs that meet weekly at the Waldwick Public Library have concluded for the season. Meetings for the ESL Conversation Group will resume Monday, Sept. 12 at 10:15 a.m., and meetings for English Language Learning Activities will resume Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. ESL programs at the library are free and open to adults

Summer Reading Club registration under way Children ages two and up are invited to participate in the Waldwick Library Summer Reading Club, One World, Many Stories, through Aug. 26. Children who read 10 books at their grade level or higher, or have 20 books read to them, qualify for prizes at the end of summer. Sign up may be completed at the front desk. Waldwick High classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited. Borough issues solicitors’ permits The Borough of Waldwick reminds residents that every person who solicits door to door is required to carry a copy of a borough-issued permit. If a solicitor cannot produce the borough’s permit, residents should contact the police department. Borough clarifies traffic regulations When an intersection contains a no turn on red sign and a traffic light with a green arrow to allow a right turn, the arrow takes precedence. Vehicles may proceed if their lane is controlled by a green arrow that is illuminated. When the arrow is no longer illuminated and the traffic light is red, vehicles must obey the no turn on red sign. Sign up for e-mail notification The Borough of Waldwick urges its residents to sign up for the E-mail Notification Program by visiting www.waldwicknj.org and clicking on “Join our email notification program.” Participants will receive news and announcements. Operation Reassurance available The Waldwick Police Department’s Operation Reassurance program is one of the most successful in the area. This program is open to all Waldwick residents ages 55 and older. The program requires the participant to call police headquarters by a prearranged time each day. If the individual fails to call, a communications officer will try to make contact with that person. If there is no answer, a police officer will be dispatched to check on the welfare of that person. The program is free. A holiday luncheon is provided

Flu shots offered The Waldwick Board of Health now has a supply of flu vaccine available for adults. Individuals who are at least 18 years of age are encouraged to receive a flu vaccine. Participants with Medicare Part B must show their card in order to receive the vaccine. A $25 fee will be charged to those who do not have Medicare Part B. Those with Medicare HMO, or Medicare Advantage, may choose to go to their primary care provider or pay $25 for a flu vaccination. Medicare HMOs will not be accepted at the flu program.
