Saddle River Valley January 26, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 9 The Spanish-style mansion in Saddle River known as Villa Marie Claire recently reopened as Holy Name Medical Center’s hospice, and the first residents have begun moving into the facility. Previously used as an orphanage, a parish school, a retirement facility for nuns, and as a favorite sleigh-riding site, this 26acre property has been converted into a 20bed hospice that includes space for family members to meet, and an interfaith chapel that includes the building’s original stained glass windows. The property is also the state’s first facility to include lodging for family members. A separate wing devotes eight rooms to that purpose. The estate, located on East Saddle River Road, once belonged to Thomas and Marie Villa Marie Claire building reopens as hospice Claire Maloney, who gave the property to the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace in 1916. Before it was converted into a hospice, the building served as a retirement community for Catholic nuns. The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace subsequently donated the property to Holy Name Medical Center, which they founded and have sponsored since 1925. In 2009, the new hospice facility requested a sanitary sewer connection through Waldwick, and a conceptual agreement was reached.
