Official: Consider limiting number of pets per home
by Jennifer Crusco Carol Tyler, the animal control officer for the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus and many other local municipalities, has asked the Ho-Ho-Kus Council to consider an official limit on the number of pets that may be kept in each household. “I’m finding more and more houses with multiple animals,” Tyler told Villadom TIMES. “Some have too many animals, and there are problems. Not all the animals are spayed or neutered, and not all of them are healthy.” Tyler presented the council with copies of ordinances from other local municipalities to review so they can consider whether these limits should be enacted for Ho-HoKus. The borough, she noted, is one of the few municipalities in the area that does not have a limit on the number of pets that can be kept in any given household. Tyler pointed out that Montvale’s limit is four total pets, Upper Saddle River’s limit is five, Ramsey’s is five, and Park Ridge’s is seven. She added that Allendale, Saddle River, Ridgewood, and Washington Township also have ordinances in place to limit the number of pets that may be kept. She explained that the limit on the total number of pets extends to registered or licensed animals. While the proposal would cover cats and dogs in most homes, animals such as parrots, iguanas, and snakes would also count toward a total pet limit. Tyler pointed out that most reptiles must be registered with the state. “Pocket pets,” such as hamsters, and small birds, such as canaries or budgerigars (parakeets), do not require registration, so they would not count toward the number of total pets, Tyler added. If the council decides to enact a limit, Tyler recommended that existing pets beyond that limit be grandfathered; that is, allowed to remain in their current homes. She stressed the importance of having all pets licensed, and noted that the Jan. 31 deadline is rapidly approaching. In order to obtain a 2011 pet license, an animal’s rabies vaccination must be valid at least to Nov. 1, 2011. If the pet’s vaccination has been updated since the owner purchased a 2010 license, proof must be submitted with the renewal payment. Animal licenses are now available at borough hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Fees are $15 for each altered animal and $18 for each unaltered animal. After Feb. 28, a $10 late fee will be charged. Tyler added that anyone who wishes to adopt kittens, cats, or dogs of various ages may call Tyco at (201) 6524554.
