Borough awaits word on grant for control signal
by Jennifer Crusco The Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus has applied for a New Jersey Department of Transportation grant that would help cover the cost of an emergency vehicle traffic control signal that would be installed near the borough’s only firehouse on Sheridan Avenue. Borough officials expect to hear about the fate of the application in March or April. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli pointed out that the grant would be an outright presentation of money to the borough, and would not require the municipality to dedicate matching funds to the project Cirulli clarified that the borough is not currently pursuing any matching grants, because the municipality does not want to be obligated to come up with additional local funds. Matching grants require recipients to match the amount of the grant on a dollar for dollar basis. Several months ago, the Ho-Ho-Kus Council approved a resolution to allow the submission of the grant application for the control signal (or preemptive light) to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The control signal, which could cost approximately $150,000, would be placed near the firehouse at a location to be determined. Its function is to alert area motorists to exercise caution, or to stop, when fire vehicles are leaving or entering the station. The primary function of the signal is to improve safety and to provide adequate warning that fire trucks are being maneuvered in the area. Officials have said the aim is to have motorists slow down. When firefighters return from a call, two individuals usually step off the truck and stop the traffic, so the
driver can pull back into the firehouse. However, several borough officials indicated that some drivers weave around the trucks, others speed through the area, and still others are inattentive due, in part, to cell phone use. The conrol signal has been proposed as a safety precaution with the goal of protecting the local volunteer firefighters. The borough also has plans to add more striping to the roadway outside the firehouse. The resolution concerning the grant application authorized Mayor Thomas Randall and Borough Clerk Laura Borchers to submit an electronic grant application to the New Jersey DOT on the borough’s behalf. Randall and Borchers are also authorized to sign the grant agreement for the borough and such signature would constitute “acceptance of the terms and conditions of the grant agreement.”
