Louis Riccardi was 13 when a friend’s father, an avid collector of watch fobs, presented him with a fob as a gift. Since that time, the life-long Waldwick resident has amassed the impressive collection of 70 watch fobs currently on display at the Waldwick Public Library. Featured in the exhibit are 27 fobs commemorating annual conventions of the American Legion from the 1920s through the 1960s, 35 used as sales incentives by construction companies, and an additional eight miscellaneous pieces. A few of the more unusual pieces in the collection include one fashioned in the shape of an arrowhead and another featuring a design in relief of a Native American on horseback. One of Riccardi’s favorite fobs, dated 1939, displays a red heart in the center surrounded by the emblems of the Legion Family: The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion. Riccardi is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served from 1968 to 1970 in the 35th Infantry, Fourth Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. A member of the Walter Nightengale Post 57 of the American Legion since 1970,
