Waldwick January 12, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Chief continues tradition Ken Warr Sr. (center) became Waldwick Fire Chief last week. Pictured with Warr were (from left) son Ken Warr Jr., wife Julie Warr, daughter Staci Warr, and Waldwick Borough Clerk Paula Jaegge. Last week, Ken Warr Sr. was sworn in as Waldwick’s new fire chief, becoming the fifth person in his family to hold that post. Over the years, Warr’s father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and greatgreat-grandfather have served as the borough’s fire chief. And the next generation is already poised for the future: Warr’s son, Ken Jr., is a captain in the department, and Warr’s daughter, Staci, reportedly plans to join the ambulance corps. The new chief has been a service technician for Shotmeyer Brothers Fuel Corp. in Hawthorne for 28 years. He became involved in firefighting through his father, who had been member of the Hawthorne Fire Department before the family moved to Waldwick. The new chief served Hawthorne for 16 years, attaining the rank of captain. He then moved to Waldwick, where he has been a member of that borough’s fire department for the last 11 years. Warr said his goals for the department will be to recruit new members and to purchase a new fire engine. Warr succeeds Walt Riker, who had been chief for the last two years. Riker has been instrumental in helping Warr make the transition to the department’s top post. In turn, Warr is poised to aid the younger firefighters by passing on hard-earned knowledge from hands-on experience. The Waldwick Police Department has arrested a 40-year-old Newark resident and charged him with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, and one count of criminal attempt to commit burglary. The arrest, which took place Dec. 22, was a result of an investigation into recent burglaries and an attempted burglary in the area of Nordham Street. Additional charges were filed against the suspect in several other Bergen County communities for burglary and related offenses, and he was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail. Waldwick Detective Sergeant Doug Moore reported that the suspect was first arrested in Rutherford. After speaking with police officers from multiple jurisdictions, he admitted to 21 daytime burglaries throughout Bergen County. Moore said the Waldwick Police Department was investigating an attempted residential burglary which occurred on Dec. 20 and two residential burglaries that occurred on Dec. 21. The residences are located on Newark man arrested for multiple burglaries different streets in the vicinity of Nordham Street. The incidents took place during daytime hours. In the Dec. 20 attempted burglary, the front door of a Lincoln Place residence was either shouldered or kicked in, but the intruder was startled by a dog in the residence and did not go inside. Moore said two incidents were reported on Dec. 21. At 3 p.m., police learned of a break in on Summit Avenue. The door had been shouldered or kicked in, and a laptop and jewelry were reported stolen. At 6 p.m. the same day, a Grove Street resident reported that the back door of the residence had been shouldered or kicked in and a computer, camera, and jewelry had been stolen. Moore had been working closely with Allendale Police Detective John Mattiace, who determined that a burglary in his jurisdiction and those in Waldwick were related since the same mode of entry was used (continued on page 20) Serving the needs of all small businesses Weekly/Bi Weekly Payroll Processing & Delivery Federal & State Payroll Taxes Payments & Forms Electronically Transmitted BK BOOKKEEPING & PAYROLL SERVICE, LLC Bring You Over 23 Years of Bookkeeping/Accounting Experience Annmarie Breeman & Nancy Kough 201-962-2922 240 W.
