Councilman Schoepflin remembered that when he and Mayor Barra had first ventured to Trenton, ignoring warnings that affluent Republican towns wouldn’t get any grant money, they were in fact warmly welcomed and began a cycle in which Allendale or its residents have received money to buy 3.4-acre Orchard Commons and preserve it as a passive park, have saved the John Fell House, and have used other money to reduce tax increases from about seven percent when Barra took office to about 2.5 percent, said to be the third lowest in Bergen County. Mayor Barra said that when the Foreit Property on West Crescent Avenue is acquired by the borough in the next few weeks, he hopes to add six affordable units to the 17 units for residents with developmental disorders or MS, and make those housing units available to working people who volunteer as firefighters and are part of the borough’s vital infrastructure. He added that Allendale is well ahead of the curve in terms of shared services, and has arrangements with Ridgewood for videotaping, with Ho-Ho-Kus for court services, and with Waldwick for child care.
