Forty-two teams were in attendance at the two-day event. Danny Tyson placed third in the 119 weight class, Brian Bandstra placed fifth in the 145 weight class, and Paul Lowry placed sixth in the 189 weight class. The team placed 17th. Successful effort Area First season was charmed The 29th annual Ridgewood/Glen Rock observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be held on Monday, Jan. 17 at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street in Ridgewood. New Jersey Public Defender Yvonne Smith Segars will be the keynote speaker at this year’s celebration, which focuses on the theme, “Working for the Common Good.” Sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Ridgewood/Glen Rock Communities, the celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with an interfaith service presided over by Reverend Dr. George W. Maize, III, pastor of the Metropolitan AME King Day observance scheduled The Tsunami Basketball Boys 13U AAU team finished with a winning record in its first season during the fall of 2010. Composed of players from Waldwick, Englewood Cliffs, Wayne, Pequannock, and Oakland, the team was coached by Tom Lambert and Tope Adekanbi out of the YM-YWHA of North Jersey in Wayne. Tsunami Basketball competed in the Hoop Dreamz league and area tournaments, and are shown here at their end-ofseason celebration. The service will be followed by a rally in Van Neste Square at 11 a.m. and a community luncheon. The afternoon fellowship program, featuring Public Defender Segars, will begin at 1 p.m. and will include readings by Ridgewood and Glen Rock high school students. Segars, who resides in Ridgewood, has been serving as New Jersey’s Public Defender since 2002. She is a veteran public defender and a leading force in the creation of special drug courts throughout the state. The annual Ridgewood/Glen Rock Martin Luther King Jr. celebration began in 1983 in an effort to unite area residents.
