Borough reorganizes; Barra begins final term
by John Koster Allendale Mayor Vince Barra took his oath of office from Bergen County Freeholder Maura DeNicola and presented a “state of the borough” speech and a pledge that he would not seek a third term as mayor. “This last election was my last election,” Mayor Barra said. “I will not run again.” DeNicola, who was mayor of Franklin Lakes and is now vice chair of the Bergen County Freeholders, praised Barra for his diligent and pro-active first term. “I respect him greatly for his incredible leadership of this well-run town,” she said. “It’s very humbling to be sworn in again as the mayor of this really wonderful town,” Barra said at the beginning his speech. “I am blessed with this council. Bernstein is the alternate member. The citizen members of the board who were reappointed were Stephan Sasso and Carol Sheehan. Jim Wright, an author and environmentalist, was appointed as assistant marsh warden. Wright will support Marsh Warden Mike Limatola who recently replaced the legendary first Marsh Warden Stiles Thomas. Thomas was instrumental in saving the Celery Farm Natural Area from development. Dave Baez was reappointed fire chief, with Ernest Cassidy as deputy chief and Hans Cunningham as emergency officer. “I think we’re very lucky to have all the people who volunteer for these roles,” said Councilwoman Elizabeth White. Barra said that in his final term as mayor, he hopes to double the $6.5 million in federal, state, and county grants to Allendale to a total of $12 million and to control taxes so senior citizens and working people will not feel the (continued on page 17)
