E-waste collection to begin The Borough of Waldwick will start collecting large electronic waste on Jan. 17, in accordance with New Jersey’s Electronic Waste Management Act, which mandates all electronic waste be removed from the waste stream and recycled. The third Monday of the month has been designated for the e-recycling. The remaining Mondays will continue to be used for white goods collections. Pickup appointments must be made by calling the borough clerk’s office at (201) 652-5300, extension 0 to be put on the pickup schedule for the collection of large items such as televisions, computers, and monitors. There will also be a container available at the recycling center for smaller items such as keyboards, mice, speakers, cell phones, and chargers. The DPW will not collect small items. Residents are responsible for bringing these items to the recycling center. The recycling center is open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Acceptable electronic waste includes: computers; laptops; monitors; televisions; desktop printers and printer/ fax/copier/scanner combinations; computer peripherals, including keyboards, mice, hard drives, and other devices; fax machines; DVD players; VCRs and other video players; and cell phones and accessories, including chargers. Snow and ice removal reminders Waldwick residents and businesses are reminded to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks. All sidewalks must be shoveled for the full width of the sidewalk and driveway apron. Any sidewalk terminating at a corner must be shoveled to the point where the paved surface of the street meets the sidewalk (Chapter 79, Snow and Ice Removal in the Code of the Borough of Waldwick). No person, including the owner or occupant of any premises abutting on any street, shall throw, place, or deposit any snow or ice into or upon any street in the borough, or onto the property of another person’s without the property owner’s express permission. A summons may be levied if snow or ice is not removed from sidewalks or snow or ice is deposited, thrown or placed upon any sidewalk or street. Property owners with a fire hydrant on their property are asked to clear the snow away so the hydrant is visible. Lacrosse registration planned The Waldwick Lacrosse Association will hold registration for the upcoming spring season on Wednesday, Jan. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus (corner of Smith Street and West Prospect Avenue) in Waldwick. Registration is open to boys and girls in grades three
through eight, and the fee is $135. For the Fiddlestix program, which is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through grade two, the fee is $50. Thompsons Sporting Goods will be on hand to fit and take orders for equipment. There will also be an opportunity to place WLAX clothing orders. WLA is planning to offer an equipment exchange to make good use of any unused or outgrown gear. Cleats, LAX pads, LAX gloves, and helmets are needed. Deadline approaches for pet license renewals Waldwick residents are reminded their annual pet licenses must be renewed before Feb. 1. A valid rabies certificate must be presented, with the expiration date no earlier than October of the licensing year. There has been a fee increase: $15 for spayed/neutered dogs, and $18 for unaltered dogs. After Feb.1, a late fee of $10 will be imposed. Cat license fees are $15 and must be accompanied by a valid rabies certificate as cited above. No additional fee is charged for unaltered cats. Licenses may be renewed by mail. Scouts hold newspaper drive Waldwick Boy Scouts will be collecting newspapers for recycling on Saturday, Jan. 15. Residents are asked to bundle papers in stacks no more than eight inches and leave them at the curb the night before. Please note: Any papers put at the curb after 8 a.m. on Saturday may be missed. Classic Film Series features breakout roles Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction setting the film in its historical context will precede each screening. The theme for January is breakout roles. The schedule of screenings is as follows: Jan. 13, “Petrified Forest” starring Humphrey Bogart (1936); Jan. 20, “Blackboard Jungle” starring Sydney Poitier (1955); and Jan. 27, “They Drive by Night” starring Ida Lupino (1940). Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary; however arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Book Club to discuss ‘The Bird Artist’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “The Bird Artist” by Howard Norman on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7:15 p.m. This unconventional love story set in Newfoundland was a 1994 National Book Award finalist. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk.

Borough clarifies traffic regulations When an intersection contains a no turn on red sign and a traffic light with a green arrow to allow a right turn, the arrow takes precedence. Vehicles may proceed if their lane is controlled by a green arrow that is illuminated. When the arrow is no longer illuminated and the traffic light is red, vehicles must obey the no turn on red sign. WCA extends Mercedes fundraiser The Waldwick Community Alliance’s Mercedes-Benz C300 fundraiser has been extended to Feb. 27. Proceeds will benefit the restoration of the Waldwick Train Station. Chamber of commerce to meet The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce will hold its first general meeting of 2011 on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 8:30 a.m. at the Energy Zone on Hopper Avenue. Any Waldwick business interested in learning more about the chamber is welcome to attend. Light refreshments are served. Plans are now in gear for the 5K Run, scheduled for May 1. Operation Reassurance available The Waldwick Police Department’s Operation Reassurance program is one of the most successful in the area. This program is open to all Waldwick residents ages 55 and older. The program requires the participant to call police headquarters by a prearranged time each day. If the individual fails to call, a communications officer will try to make contact with that person. If there is no answer, a police officer will be dispatched to check on the welfare of that person.
