Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • February 23, 2011 Area Members of the volunteer fire departments from Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Oakland,, and Waldwick and volunteers from the Wyckoff Ambulance Corps recently joined forces to fine-tune their ice rescue skills. During the weekend exercise, volunteers cut holes in the ice covering Wyckoff’s Zabriskie Pond, and firefighters dressed in thermal wet suits were placed in the water. Members of the local fire departments then practiced their life saving rescue skills, including how to safely reach persons trapped in frozen or partially frozen water. The four fire departments created real life situations and practiced rescue techniques with specially manufactured equipment that can be deployed to rescue single and multiple victims. This equipment was purchased through a grant from the Bergen County 200 Club. Approximately 30 firefighters from Wyckoff, six volunteers from the Wyckoff Ambulance Corps, and 30 firefighters from the neighboring municipalities practiced these techniques and procedures from 9:30 am until noon. The Wyckoff Fire Department extends its thanks to township residents who clear snow and ice from the fire hydrants in front of their homes. The residents’ efforts help keep the township safe and allow the fire department’s volunteers to devote their time to fighting fires and participating in training exercises. The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department is comprised of 100 volunteers who received 140 hours of basic firematic training at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute and continue their training every Monday evening in Wyckoff, where they develop and fine tune skills such as search and rescue, fire suppression, fire attack, fire ground Firefighters, corps members practice ice rescue Firefighters and ambulance corps volunteers practice an ice rescue. communications, and advanced vehicle rescue techniques. These highly trained and skilled volunteers serve the community by assisting their neighbors in the protection of life and property. This year marks the 104th year that volunteers of the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department have served the township and its residents. Break the Highway Trend! ...not your community’s back.
