lence, which comes with a $10,000 cash award and qualifies her for the $25,000 NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence. Known as the Academy Awards of public education, the NEA Foundation’s gala attracts more than 800 of the nation’s leaders in education, business, and philanthropy. Woods-Murphy was nominated by the New Jersey Education Association and was one of 31 public school educators selected for the awards by their state’s NEA affiliate. “New Jersey is fortunate to have Maryann as its educational spokesperson, and we are privileged and honored to count her as a member,” said NJEA President Barbara Keshishian. “She truly embodies teaching and personal excellence. We are proud to nominate her to receive this prestigious award.” During the gala, a video honoring Woods-Murphy premiered. The video was created by her students, with digital arts training from the Pearson Foundation. “Maryann is a committed educator who is continually improving her practice to benefit students,” said Harriet Sanford, president and CEO of the NEA Foundation. “For the commitment to her craft and students, we are pleased to honor her.” In addition to this recognition, Woods-Murphy will travel with the other awardees on a 10-day cultural and edu-

The final abatement of the asbestos in a crawl space under Allendale’s Brookside School has been planned for this year’s summer vacation. Specifications are being sent out to potential bidders. The administrative staff will relocate to the Hillside School while the abatement takes place. No students will be on the premises when the work is in progress, and the
