Rude Polly Patrick Namack Walter Hertz Scholarship fund is tribute to Huisking While Josephine Huisking may no longer be with us, her memory continues on through her many achievements and those of the people she inspired. To date, over $28,000 has been donated to the Josephine Huisking Memorial Scholarship Fund at Eastwick College in Ramsey. The fund will help future students achieve successful Josephine Huisking careers in the nursing field, an appropriate legacy to be established in Huisking’s name, given the hard work and commitment she put into ensuring each of her students excelled. Huisking, who died last year, was known as an outstanding mother, teacher, and active member of the Allendale community. As a teenager, Huisking volunteered in the hospital as a “candy striper,” a nickname for hospital volunteers who wore red-and-white striped jumpers. After high school, she entered an associate program at the Kings Park State Hospital. She later received her registered nursing license and left for Massachusetts General Hospital. Two years later, she married William Skip Huisking, and took a job as a visiting nurse while earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Connecticut. After her first child was born, the family moved to Pennsylvania. Several days a week for the next two years, she drove to Penn State University to earn her master’s in nursing. She graduated with honors, and subsequently moved to Allendale. When she began working at Eastwick College (then the HoHoKus School) in 1994, Huisking only wanted to teach a few hours a week. She was busy raising her three children and working on the Allendale School Board. However, she quickly went from working a couple of hours per week to becoming corporate director of nursing. Under her tutelage, Eastwick Education became the first proprietary school in the state to offer an LPN program, the first in the nation to offer a Hispanic bilingual LPN program, and the first private sector college in the state to offer a registered nursing degree. She was known for her positive attitude and for focusing on solutions rather than problems. Donations to the Josephine Huisking Memorial Scholarship Fund may be sent to 10 South Franklin Turnpike, Ramsey, NJ 07446.
