Walwick Mayor Russell J. “Buddy” Litchult announced last week that he will not seek reelection to a second term. He said it’s time to give someone else a chance to seek the office. “I thank the borough residents for the privilege of serving them for the past four years,” the mayor said. “I’ve had 40 years in public office. It’s time to decrease my time and get new blood,” he added. Litchult was a councilman from 1972 to 1993, followed by three terms as a school board member. He said he is most proud the fact that the governing body has been able to trim its expenses so that this year’s tax rate increase will be the lowest in many years. “At my swearing on Jan. 1, 2008, former mayor (James) Toolen said that he’d be watching me. Evidently, I’ve been doing something right, because he never came back,” the mayor quipped. The Waldwick Band will perform Saturday, Feb. 5 at The Village School in Waldwick. The 3 p.m. concert will feature the band’s trumpet section. The band, under the baton of music director Edmund A. Moderacki, will open the concert with its 2010-11 signature piece, Henry Fillmore’s “Americans We.” Moderacki will conduct the ensemble in Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture,” “Three Klezmer Miniatures” by Philip Sparke, and music from Richard Rodgers’ “Victory at Sea.” The program also includes “Glen Miller in Concert,” Paul Murtha’s arrangement of the music associated with Miller; Moses Simons’ “The Peanut Vendor;” and Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.” Marches by Jaime Texidor, Karl Teike, and John Phillip Sousa will complete the

The trumpets of the Waldwick Band will present two special ensemble pieces, “The March” from Handel’s “Judas Maccabeus” and the American folksong “Shenandoah.” This is the first time the entire trumpet section is being featured at the band’s concerts The remaining concerts in the Waldwick Band’s winter series are scheduled for March 13 and May 1. There is no admission charge for the concert.

He has also officiated for 35 weddings. “And there are some to go yet,” he said. Born and raised in Waldwick, Litchult was on the Waldwick Police Department from 1956-70. In that time he established the Waldwick Detective Bureau, attaining the rank of lieutenant. In 1994, he retired as vice president and security director of Dime Savings Bank of New York. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mayor Litchult is a member of the American Legion and a past commander of the VFW. He is also an exempt fireman, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a past president of Junior Football. He is an active parishioner of St. Luke’s Church. Litchult said that he will stay in town after stepping down from politics and will continue active in his church and other activities. “I’m very happy here in my home with my two Chihuahuas,” he said.
