Allendale December 7, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Education foundation’s fall grants total $19,468 by John Koster The Allendale Education Foundation has donated $19,468 to programs at the Hillside and Brookside schools in the fall grant cycle. The gifts were accepted at a late November Allendale Board of Education meeting. The foundation, which supports educational programs at no additional expense to the borough’s taxpayers, awarded grants to teachers within the system. The foundation also provided $600 for third graders to tour the historic John Fell House on Franklin Turnpike. Patricia Finn, one of the Concerned Citizens of Allendale activists who helped CCA acquire the pre-Revolutionary War mansion, will host the tour. The Fell House, once slated for the bulldozer, is now the focal point of a restoration campaign to turn it into a historical resource. Students in the Allendale school system were credited with helping to raise consciousness and attract donations. At the Hillside School, Mrs. Maria Perillo and Mrs. Maria Keenan received a $3,540 grant to teach “Mad Science throughout the Seasons” At the kindergarten level, Mrs. Katie Hess received an $808 grant to teach “High Touch High Tech: Weather or Not” at the first grade level. Mrs. Shannon Rutowski received a $900 grant for the Rainforest Butterflies Program at the second grade level. Mrs. Wendy Nadel received $490 for a Lenape Indian Preservation Assembly for the third grade and $850 for a Birds of Prey assembly for the Area third grade, and Mrs. Peggi Lees received $6,910 for a SMARTboard for the Hillside School Library. At the Brookside School, Mrs. Kitty Barnett received a $1,050 grant for the course called “Myth Understood” for the fourth through eighth grades, and a $400 grant for a Space Class 101 assembly for the sixth grade science program. Mrs. Helen Schlavis received a grant for the fifth grade science program for “High Touch High Tech Silly Cells for the fifth grade science program, Mrs. Laura Boggio received a $1,477 grant for Historical Fiction Cross Curricular Reading & Writing, Mrs. Tracy Lewis received $816 for a Morris County Museum Loan Program featuring boxed exhibits, and Mrs. Michelle Antonucci received $687 for a document camera for the Reader’s & Writers workshop for sixth grade language arts students. The Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission will sponsor three all-day ski trips in 2012. Trips will include Windham Mountain on Jan. 14, Jimminy Peak Mountain on Jan. 21, and Mount Snow, Vermont on Jan. 28. This program is open to skiers in grades six through 12 who attend school in Ho-Ho-Kus, Brookside School and Northern Highlands High School in Allendale, Cavallini and Bogert schools in Upper Saddle River, and students who reside in the Borough of Upper Saddle River and attend other schools. The cost for all three trips, including luxury coach Ski trips planned for local students transportation, lifts, lunch for all trips, and all three meals for the Jimminy and Mount Snow trips, is $350. Students may sign up for individual trips, the cost of which is outlined in the registration form. Registration forms will be available at the Upper Saddle River website, www.USRToday.org, at borough hall, and at the schools. Space is limited. Those who register will be accommodated on a “first come” basis.
