Phone service was back to normal in the Borough of Waldwick last week, after a power failure left the administration building’s main number out of service. On Tuesday, Nov. 29, an e-mail blast from the borough announced: “The police, fire, and ambulance services are currently working on a backup phone system which handles less call volume than the regular phone system. In the event of an emergency the 911 system is recommended. The main police number, (201) 652-5700, is operational but heavy call volume may cause a busy signal which is why the 911 system is recommended until further notice. The Administration Building, (201) 652-5300, is out of service until further notice.” Public Service Electric & Gas was dealing with widespread power outages in nearby Hawthorne and Wayne last Tuesday, and those problems extended into Waldwick. Waldwick Borough Administrator Gary Kratz told Villadom TIMES that the problem had persisted in Waldwick due to a “minor blip” with the borough’s backup generator, which he said did not operate as expected. Kratz indicated that phone service had been restored as of 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30. He explained that the generator powers two buildings, the administration building, and police headquarters. Waldwick Cub Scout Den leader Dave Davis knew his pack could learn about the environment while earning a conservation badge right in their own back yard at White’s Pond. Davis called on Friends of White’s Pond founder Andrea Mistretta to see if the cubs could share in the community’s efforts to raise awareness of this special pond. Mistretta recommended Waldwick’s Stephanie Quierolo to introduce her colleague, NJ DEP Watershed Ambassador Patricia Michelotti, and their age-specific field demonstration program. The presentation was developed to teach youngsters how the quality of water that flows in a local streams affects humans and the health of the many species of wildlife dependent on White’s Pond.
