Holidays at the Hermitage The Hermitage Museum in Ho-Ho-Kus, which is currently decked in historic decorations by the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club, will be presenting its “Here We Go A-Caroling” display through Jan. 15. This year, each room at the National Landmark Victorian home at 335 Franklin Turnpike has been designed to evoke the spirit of a different Christmas carol. In conjunction with the holiday decorating, the Friends of the Hermitage will host the annual “Champagne & Candlelight” fundraiser on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. Hosted by the board of trustees, the evening will begin with a champagne toast, followed by specialty foods and live entertainment by the Bergen County a cappella vocal quartet, The Moodswings, at the museum’s education building. Admission to “Champagne & Candlelight” is $60 per person, and advance reservations are recommended. RSVP to the museum office at (201) 445-8311, extension 36. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the museum’s educational programs for children. The museum is open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. The Hermitage is one of the nation’s outstanding examples of domestic Gothic Revival architecture. The house incorporates a stone structure that was visited during the Revolutionary War by George Washington and was the site where Aaron Burr met and married Theodosia Prevost. The house’s architectural appearance dates to the 1847 remodeling and enlargement designed by the architect William H. Ranlett. Today, the home’s furnishings reflect the late Victorian lifestyle of the Rosencrantz family. The
museum collection is notable for its historic clothing, personal items, and papers related to the Rosencrantz family who owned and lived in the home from 1807 to 1970. The Friends of the Hermitage, Inc., a nonprofit membership organization, manages the Hermitage, a New Jersey State Park.
