On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department will host a Day of Reflection at Fire Company #2 on Wyckoff Avenue to commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York City and Washington, D.C. This solemn ceremony will include the rededication of the memorial located on site. The unveiling of the redesigned monument and the

memorial ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the presentation of colors by the Waldwick Fire Department Honor Guard. Marion Giordano was instrumental in raising funds for the refurbishment of the memorial. As president of the Waldwick Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Giordano helped organize fundraisers for the cause. Benefit events included Fish & Chips Dinners among other community activities. Giordano said she and the auxiliary wanted to do something for the community that would keep alive the memory of those who perished as the result of the terrorist attack, including Waldwick resident John Griffin. With the funds the auxiliary raised – sponsors asked that the amount be kept confidential -- volunteers planned to remove the mulch that had surrounded the monument, construct a “knee wall,” and add trees and flowers to the site before the rededication. Plans call for additions and improvements to be made to the site in future years. The memorial includes steel beam from the World Trade Center and a marker. The beam was dedicated in 2002 to all who lost their lives, including firefighters who responded to the scene, and to Griffin. The dedication adds, “May they always and forever be in our hearts.” Each year, a quiet ceremony is held at the monument. This year’s ceremony will include a bagpiper, and participants from several local churches. At press time, Saint Luke’s R.C. Church, the United Methodist Church, and Christ Community Church had committed to taking part in the ceremony. Plans call for members of the participating houses of worship to present a reading and then pause. A participant will then ring a bell and “Taps” will be played as those in attendance remember the times each hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Tom Giordano, a councilman and firefighter, said the ceremony will be brief and apolitical, although members of the governing body plan to be in attendance.
Children get toys from Lions
Waldwick Lions Club member Greg Bjork delivered a donation of toys to Kristin Gerasimow, child life specialist at Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson. The toys were collected through the efforts of the Waldwick Lions Club for use by young patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and will be placed in the ‘SpongeBob Cabinet.’ One of the busiest state designated children’s hospitals in New Jersey, Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is recognized for advanced top quality responsive and compassionate pediatric care designed to treat the whole child.
