August 31, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 27 Waldwick Watch Summer Concert Series finale set The Waldwick Band will conclude its summer season with a concert on Friday, Sept. 2. (Rain date: Sept. 9.) Under the direction of Edmund A. Moderacki, the band will present Adrien Boieldieu’s “Overture to The Calif of Bagdad.” The program will also include Jaime Texidor’s “Amparito Roca,” Moise Simon’s “The Peanut Vendor,” music from Richard Rodgers’ and Robert Russell Bennett’s “Victory at Sea,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide Overture,” and a selection entitled “Glenn Miller in Concert.” The jazz/rock fusion classic “Birdland” will complete the program. The concert will take place in the parking lot of Hudson City Savings Bank on East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Audience members are encouraged to bring their own seating. This free concert, which will begin at 8 p.m., is sponsored by the Waldwick Department of Recreation. Weather updates for the concert are available at www. waldwickband.org. Save the Date for Waldwick Day The eighth annual Waldwick Day, sponsored by the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 from noon to 5 p.m. at Borough Park. (Rain date: Sunday, Sept. 25.) The Chamber invites outside crafters to set up booths this year. Attendees can look forward to stalls containing everything from jewelry, Pampered Chef, Avon, Tupperware, hand painted silk scarves, tutus, palm readers, and tie-dying. This year, the day is being extended to 5 p.m. There will be music, food, an obstacle course and games, a pie eating contest, and the Lions Club’s Duck Derby. The event gives Waldwick Chamber members the opportunity to showcase their goods and services or to sponsor an attraction and/or activity in appreciation to the community. Girl Scout registration coming up All girls, beginning with those who will be entering kindergarten, are invited to be part of the Girl Scouting experience. Registration will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Waldwick Ambulance Corps Building, 20 Whites Lane, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Girl Scout program provides fun, friendship, and enriching experiences through field trips, sports skillbuilding clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardship programs. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Opportunities are available for adults interested in working with girls as a troop leader and assistant leader. Scouts assist families in need Club to discuss ‘Winter Vault’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Winter Vault” by Anne Michaels on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7:15 p.m. Michaels, a Canadian poet and novelist, explores loss, displacement, and human connection in this novel about a married couple living on a houseboat on the Nile River during the construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s. Call (201) 652-5104. Waldwick High classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited. English language classes to resume The Waldwick Library hosts two classes that are free and Waldwick Girl Scout Cadette Troop 826 recently wrote letters to several companies, held many fundraisers, and set up collection boxes so they could help families in need. The troop donated 97 backpacks and school supplies to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. The girls are working on their Silver Award project. open to adults who want assistance learning and speaking English. Classes include a conversation group and a learning activities group. Please note that ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages, was previously known as ESL: English as a Second Language. The ESOL Conversation Group will meet on Mondays at 10:15 a.m. beginning Sept. 12. This class will feature guided discussions about world news and topics of personal interest. English Language Learning Activities will meet on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. beginning Sept. 13. This class will emphasize skill development in reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar.
