Bon Secours Charity Health System received a special Award for Patient Safety during a ceremony held at the Suffern Medical Pavilion on the Good Samaritan Hospital campus in Suffern, New York. Each year, the Northern Metropolitan (“NorMet”) Patient Safety Institute honors those member hospitals that demonstrate exceptional quality in patient care and safety. This year Good Samaritan Hospital, Bon Secours Community Hospital, and St. Anthony Community Hospital represented by the Patient Flow Team received the award for accomplishments in reducing LBMSE (left before medical screening exam) rates at all three of the hospitals’ emergency departments. The team designed and implemented a number of new processes to improve patient flow in the emergency department and reduce the number of patients who are triaged in the emergency departments but then leave before receiving a medical screening exam. As a result of their efforts, LBMSE has been less than or equal to one percent at Bon Secours Charity Health System acute care facilities since September 2010. This has resulted in increased emergency department volumes, greater patient satisfaction, and financial savings for the system. “We are pleased to present the NorMet Quality & Patient Safety Award to a much deserving hospital system,” said Kevin Dahill, president and CEO of NorMet. “This award is only given to hospitals that offer the best health care to all in need. With the number of emergency room patient reports at an all-time high in 2010, Bon Secours has exemplified the true meaning of this award through their endless efforts of patient care.” Philip Patterson, CEO Bon Secours Charity Health System along with members of the Patient Flow Team accepted the award from NorMet President Kevin Dahill. “I am extremely proud of our hospitals and the team that identified and implemented the necessary improvements to ensure that we continue to raise the bar on patient care and safety.” said Patterson. “Our patients are at the center of all we do and our Patient Flow Team continues to make substantial contributions to our strategic improvements. We appreciate this award and the recognition it represents.” Bon Secours Charity Health System Patient Flow Team Members include: Liz Ponte and Shari Gold, team leaders; Robert Dittmeier, MD, physician leader; Gerry Durney, administrative champion; Brian Blaufeux, MD; Lucia Bonnier; Catherine Browne; Bijo Chacko, MD; Dawn Chester; Carla Errico; Caryn Gallione; Michele Gregorio; Eileen Hamilton; Marlena Jenks; Drew Lerman; Judy Lindberg; Michelle Lopriore; Hipolito Maldonado; Sarah Monahan; Joie Ogrodnick; Peg Palermo; Jeff Reilly; Loreta SanJuan; Sue Anne Sorrentino; Regina Stafford; Anita Sultana; Debbie Thomas; Ken Turner; Seph McFarland; Iris Verdi; Amey Harvey; Howard Wilen; Lyn Wessels; Diane Wilcomes; Michael Jefferson, MD; Kimberly Mackenzie; and Maureen Reynolds.
