Stephen was known as a gifted evangelist, preaching the teachings of Jesus to the people of Jerusalem, including members of the Hellenistic synagogues. Acts of the Apostles describes how Stephen was tried by the Sanhedrin for blasphemy against Moses and God and for speaking against the temple and the law. He was stoned to death by a mob encouraged by Saul of Tarsus, who later became Saint Paul. Saint Stephen is traditionally depicted with a crown of martyrdom, three stones, and the martyrs’ palm.
