Classes include a conversation group and a learning activities group. Please note that ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages, was previously known as ESL: English as a Second Language. The ESOL Conversation Group will meet on Mondays at 10:15 a.m. beginning Sept. 12. This class will feature guided discussions about world news and topics of personal interest. English Language Learning Activities will meet on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. beginning Sept. 13. This class will emphasize skill development in reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. Memorial alumni soccer game set Waldwick High School’s Men’s Alumni will host a soccer game in memory of Michael Mayer on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. Mayer, a multi-year varsity letterman and past captain of the Waldwick High School Soccer Team, died July 13. He was 19. Participants in the game will include players and coaches from past Waldwick High School men’s soccer teams. Admission is $5 per person. Proceeds will be used to create a scholarship in Mayer’s memory. The game will take place on the high school turf field at 155 Wyckoff Avenue. Students earn dean’s list honors The following Waldwick students have earned dean’s list recognition at William Paterson University: Lauren Byrne, Kristie Fucarino, Jacklyn Ritondale, Michael Rizzo, and Steven Vroom. In order to qualify for the dean’s list, a student must carry a minimum of 12 credits for the semester and earn a grade point average of 3.45 or better. Author to demonstrate creation of a picture book Children’s author/illustrator Jennifer Merz will present “From Paper Bags to Picture Book,” a special story and craft program for children. The program will be held at the Waldwick Public Library, 19 East Prospect Street, at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 17. Using storyboards, collage materials, and a PowerPoint display, Merz will demonstrate how she writes and illustrates her picture books, starting with treasured memories and brown paper bags. Her final illustrations are beautifully textured, handcrafted collages created in fullcolor. Participants will make a torn-paper collage during the craft session. Merz is the author of “Playground Day!” and “That Dancin’ Dolly.” A resident of Allendale, she is currently employed as a library assistant at the Waldwick Library. Borough issues solicitors’ permits The Borough of Waldwick reminds residents that every person who solicits door to door is required to carry a copy of a borough-issued permit. If a solicitor cannot produce the borough’s permit, residents should contact the police department. Leaders sought for Girl Scout program The Waldwick Girl Scout program is seeking volunteer leaders for new troops that will be forming in the fall. Volunteer leaders are needed for troops for girls who will be entering kindergarten. Help is also needed with established troops for older girls. Registration for new girls will be held in September. Solid waste reminder Waldwick residents may throw away large furniture items, mattresses, wooden/plastic outdoor furniture, and carpets in the regular waste. There is no need to contact the borough clerk first. Corrugated cardboard is not permitted in the waste stream and must be taken to the recycling center at 19 Industrial Way. Waldwick High classes plan reunion The Fourth Waldwick Multi-Year Reunion will be held on Oct. 1 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Doubletree/Hilton Hotel on Route 17 South in Mahwah. Graduates of the Classes of 1966 through 1976 are invited.
